Faulty key fob?

I had a nasty experience today when my ID3 key fob failed to unlock the car, despite repeated attempts. An hour later, having arranged a lift to get help, I tried again and this time it worked! Does the fob battery need changing? If so, I can’t see how to do it.

Battery needs changed, if it happens again before changing the battery remove the emergency key and use it on the drivers door lock, then place key in centre console so the immobiliser chip can be read to use the car, to change the battery remove emergency key and use it to pop off the rear fascia of the key to reveal the battery.

Assuming the emergency key is still there, that is. The number of times I have had it fall out, as the design of the release button on the fob is pitiful. It is so easy to press inadvertently.

As a result of a faulty key mechanism (metal key retainer) I lost the fob when out walking. I called to my local VW dealer and got absolutely no satisfaction when I mentioned the faulty mechanism. I got an estimate for a new key at just below €500 ..moral of the story don’t depend on VW to accept any responsibility.

I posted a thread about this very issue, maybe 18 months ago. I nearly lost my fob on a few occasions. So I bought a cover for the fob, which restricts the ability to inadvertently press the key release button, which is what I had been doing.

The VW keyfob is a really cheap and tacky offering. We discovered that one of our 2 fobs has just stopped working for no apparent reason. It has to go to VW for testing / repair and a replacement is around £400. On top of this they eat batteries like nobody's business. I have taken it to a vehicle locksmith with all the gear and he says that VW will not share the latest tech info so it is unfixable by independents at the moment.

More restrictive practice rubbish from VW I'm afraid. Very disappointing.

Might be so that IDs aren't disappearing off people's drives with home made keys every 5 minutes.. Nothing wrong with the key fob, as well made as any other I have seen. (on a car under £80k)
