Re: Insurance prices
I got my renewal quote for Direct Line. It's going up from £341 to £582. The policy started on a car with insurance group 1E, so an increase isn't that unexpected for me. Unfortunately though it seems that this renewal quote is actually the best I'm going to get, having checked with Compare the Mark...

Re: Powering A Dashcam
I used the Nextbase hardwire kit to connect mine straight to the fuse box. It's not really that hard - I didn't have to cut or otherwise permanently modify anything.

Re: Can you use IPOD Classic in ID.3?
I have an ipod touch and an ipod classic. Haven't tried the classic, but the touch for music works OK over Bluetooth, if not the occasional time it thinks it's at the end of the song list. However even over Bluetooth it won't let me play audible, the audio starts for a second then it stops and the ...

Re: Solar charging the ID3 / Bi-directional charging
This technology is still in its infancy and so you can't really buy something that works yet. The main consumer deployment I know about is Ford in the US with the F-150 Lightning and the Charge Station Pro (https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/f150-lightning/features/ev-charging/ford-charge-station-pro/...

Re: Best winter tyres?
I fitted Continental WinterContact TS 870 215/55 R18 99V XL tyres on Alcar 9373 steel rims. They seem to work fine. I had originally wanted Bridgestone Blizzak LM005s but mytyres.co.uk told me after ordering that they weren't in stock, and recommended the TS 870s instead. The LM005s were the best re...

Re: 1 hour, 30 miles into ownership and the front safety camera has failed
So I had my appointment last Monday (a fortnight ago tomorrow). I drop the car off at 7am, as requested, with the understanding that I'd be picking it up around closing time that day. When I drop it off, there seems to be some confusion about what repair this is. I had brought it back to the garage ...

Re: 1 hour, 30 miles into ownership and the front safety camera has failed
My dealer contacted me today to say the camera is no longer on backorder and it should be here in a week. It'll take a day to replace the camera unit. We won't organise a service appointment until the part arrives, as that can apparently be a problem.

Re: 1 hour, 30 miles into ownership and the front safety camera has failed
Oh the camera is behind the windscreen and there was absolutely no snow or rain. The dealership spent around an hour diagnosing it. The error didn't go away after multiple restarts. My partner's Cupra Born did throw up the front assist error when we drove through a snowstorm because the ice did buil...

Re: Delivery time
Collected my ID.3 today. I didn't realise the MY22.5 Family models had a sunroof! The main problem I came across though was that my front safety camera failed an hour/30 miles into ownership, so I had to return to the dealer. I've posted about this separately (https://www.id3forums.co.uk/viewtopic.p...

1 hour, 30 miles into ownership and the front safety camera has failed
I picked up my new ID.3 today. I took it for a spin, heading about 30 miles away along a dual carriageway. Just about to pull into a supermarket, and I get warning messages: Front Assist availability is limited Lane Assist is currently unavailable Error: Dynamic Road Sign Display I take it back to t...

My car is at the dealer, ready for collection on Tuesday.
Apparently this is the first Kings Red ID.3 the dealer has ever seen.

Re: Running on empty
Chargers being occupied is just something people are going to have to get used to at peak times, like the Christmas travel season. https://twitter.com/thejamiewaters/status/1607767013321056256 The Tesla Supercharger at Tebay had a 2.5 hour long queue yesterday. Similar scenes have happened for a few...

Re: VED on EVs in the 'fiscal statement'?
As with ICEs, car makers have been trying to maximise possible revenue by shifting the market upstream. That's why we have so many more EVs that compete with Teslas rather than with the old Nissan Leaf. At the upper end, most of the drawbacks of EVs disappear - relatively few people able to afford a...

Re: VED on EVs in the 'fiscal statement'?
What I don’t understand is that the government were promoting subsidies like zero road tax and OZEV grant to meet their 2030 all electric deadline. They are now shooting themselves and the public in the foot. There is less incentive for the general public to ditch combustion and go EV. I am glad I ...

Re: Electric cars now more expensive per mile than diesel
There's nothing to stop public charging operators doing time-of-use charging as well. ToU really is the future of reducing costs, since it can help shape demand to match available supply without needing expensive extra storage or peaker plants. Is that really going to work in the way you think it w...

Re: Electric cars now more expensive per mile than diesel
If ICE vehicles really go get phased out and replaced by EVs, there will need to be some sort of road pricing or charging surchage to fill the huge hole in government income produced by the loss of road fuel duty (the OBR estimates this is worth £26.2 billion in 2022/3). Perhaps a duty on tyres? Th...
