I have to agree that Lane Assist is there are a failsafe mechanism, in the same way that emergency braking is. Similarly travel assist slows the car down when the car in front slows down. In terms of lane assist, it's definitely better at doing what it's supposed to do on the motorway. It keeps you in-lane properly rather than half over the white line and the movements are more graduated. It's no different when it comes to being annoying on smaller roads though as far as I've notice...
