Re: New charging stations - who are they for ?
... I'm talking about the ones nowhere near the motorway, in residential areas, with 5 to 10 bays selling electricity at motorway rates, i.e. 4 or 5 times a regular home tarrif. Unsurprisingly at that price they seem to be less than 5% utilised. Seems to me that at that rate the whole model is goin...

Re: The infrastructure just isn't really there
Our overnight charging prices are cheaper than available in most places though. ... I didn't know that - it surprises me. Why do you think that is? I would have thought they would have been more expensive as well. Because only a small proportion of our electricity comes from gas (oil and coal) whic...

Re: Emergency breakdown
When our car was 3 years old I did not pay to renew the VW breakdown service but took out a separate breakdown policy (UK and Europe) with the RAC. What would happen if I pressed the emergency call button above the rear view mirror now? Or indeed if I have an accident and the car calls the emergenc...

Re: The infrastructure just isn't really there
Re the discussion on price per kwh and comparison with other countries its important to remember the UK has I believe the highest electricity prices in Europe. Until that changes (I can hope/dream) its always going to be relatively expensive here I think. Make more electricity. Burn less gas. Given...

Thanks. I'm asking how you arrive at 40p. ....as opposed to 20p, 30p, 70p, etc. "Fast charging in France, with surplus electricity, is 40p per kWh (E0.44) which with some effort I suspect we are heading for. " Perhaps phrasing it as Fast charging in France, with surplus electricity, which...

Re: Contactless payments, accumulated limit
I very rarely use public charging. Think I’ve only used it 4 times in almost 3 years. Would the Octopus Electroverse be useful to me so that I don’t need to use my debit card and pay these authorisation fees? .... Whether Electroverse takes a reserve i don't know, I've not noticed it. As a general ...

Re: Too much electricity
If you want a strange idea, SOTON is a port, you can sail ships, barges, etc, full of containerised batteries in and plug them in to power the city and the port. Not the handiest way, but containerised loads are very fungible. If there isn't somewhere nearby with excess capacity at some stages of th...

... regrettable hard facts. Southampton doesn't have the grid capacity for more shore powering. Take a look at the WightLink ferry operator's plans for carbon reduction https://www.wightlink.co.uk/community/environment/zero-carbon - not one mention of Southampton. Fast charging in France, with surplus electricity, is 40p per kWh (E0.44) which with some effort I suspect we are heading for. What's the basis for expecting 40p per KWh in the UK....I mean is it based on some specialist insight you have or just wishful thinking like the rest of us ? :) We are head...

Re: Christmas in Cornwall from Fife
Sounds a good trip.
It would be interesting to know how the maintenance arrangements for the stations differ, if they do.
The 22kW chargers are 11kW for us IIUIC, so OK for a rather long dinner or an overnight stay but sub-optimal for moving on.

Re: The infrastructure just isn't really there
There are two real issues... The second issue is that EVs mean a net increase in inelastic electricity consumption. ...a world of on-street parking and using DC public charging like a petrol station means we need more despatchable electricity supply. We can do that by burning fossil fuels, like the...

In the interest of balance I don't think range anxiety is 'nonsensical'. It is probably the main reason for poor adoption. It's great for commuting but long journeys at the weekend or holidays is a different story. I recently embarked on a trip to see relatives in Scotland (331 miles) in my 77kwh L...

Re: ID.3 58KWh - range in 10 years on a cold day with four adults?
I suspect that in 10 years: Batteries will have twice the capacity per volume without large increases in weight; Batteries as above will cost no more than half what they cost now; two to 200 times as many places will remove and fit them competently; So for a quarter of the current cost you could rep...
