I'm struggling to get my android phone connected via android auto, does anyone have an idiots guides I could follow please?

I do have my phone connected for hands free phone, but when I try to connect it to the android auto, I get a black screen in the ID, and a red screen with an error message on my one, something about error code 18.

Can it connected wirelessly, or does it have to be plugged in? I tried a wireless connection and the phone didn't appear on the ID's screen. Have also tried a cable, but that's where I get the red error message. The cable is not the best, so could it be that?

You need to connect the phone to the in-car wireless (not the other way round).. [you can use a cable also but wireless is easier once set up]

Do you mean to the in car WiFi, or Bluetooth?

I've connected it via Bluetooth, but it only gives me phone access, and the android auto select button stays greyed out.

I've tried to connect to the WiFi, but it asks for the password and I haven't got a clue what the password is. I've tried the usual 12345678, and 00000000.

Probably not related and have never used Android auto, but my Moto G6 will sometimes not send texts giving an error code, possibly 18?
A reboot of the phone always fixes it.

Apparently I have.

I can't find an icon for it, but when I find it in the play store it says its installed.

When I connect with a cable in the car it does start android auro, but then crashes.

I assumed the cable isn't up to the Jo, so hoping to connect wirelessly if possible.

You need to use a good quality cable the 1st time you connect. Then you can go wireless.

It's in the Settings menu. You can rename the Wifi from default (VW xxxx or similar) and it provides the password.
You should then get messages about Android Auto etc and be able to start it.
