Isn't "winter in Islington" basically when you have to order your latte extra hot ? πŸ˜‚

At 5C.ambient this morning and a little bit of dew on the ground, those Bridgestones are very easily provoked into losing traction. Wasn't aiming to drive like a nutter, just seeing how much grip deteriorated with the cooler weather. The answer is...a lot!

Have you tried Blackcircles?

Have used them in the past and have a hood price with local fitting, they supplied Michelin Cross Climates for my GTE a while ago

Just missed out on the Costco tyre offers (Β£80 off 4) as they cycle between Michelin, Goodyear and Bridgestone. Michelin ended Sun Bridgestone started yesterday - presuming Goodyear in 3 weeks time. Will make enquiries as to what they can get in for a Goodyesr tyre.

Costco only offers the Turanza, which I currently have on.

Thanks for the Black Circles tip - they offer Vredestein Wintrac at a reasonable price. Anyone got views on those?

Costco can order in any Michelin tyre, but it's a manual process at the branch to do so - I did this to get some PSS for my Golf R. I presume (and hope) they can do the same for any Goodyear tyre. You're not just limited to what they generally stock, but you will have to wait for them to come in.

I think I give up. Tried to order through National Tyres, the only ones with availability right now, and the old adage that you get the service you pay for is true. They unilaterally cancelled my appointment, then never responded when I told them the suggested replacement time didn't work, and just booked it anyways. Impossible to reach over the phone. Order cancelled, I am going to stick with the summer tyres, and just not drive if it snows. Italy trip is off anyway, thanks Covid.

Vredestein is the cheaper option but no self sealing technology and much poorer rolling resistance - E vs C for Goodyear. What this equates to in real lost range I don't know. I'd be tempted to go for Goodyear or Continental as they are the OEM choice but, Β£118 per corner is pretty convincing. Camskill are very knowlegeable and will deliver to you. Just get Tyres on the Drive or similar to fit.

Had a similar problem getting winter SUV tyres a few years back for foreign trip. Very rare and specific size and a JLR (Jaguar Land Rover specific fitment). All sorts of people promised to deliver. Worst was My Tyres who took my money, provided tracking for delivery and then announced they had been delivered to my fitting garage of choice - all total fiction. Camskill located the tyres for me at a Pirelli centre in France and arranged for them to be delivered to the UK. Impressive. Highly recommended. I won't use anyone else now for winter tyres as they actually carry stock and have real people in a real UK call centre.

I ended up going with Cross Climates on mine. Got them from Kwik Fit (Yuck) for Β£130 per tyre.

Weather was horrible up here in Glasgow last Saturday and the car felt great.

Done 1500 miles in my CC’s now and they’re great. Don’t think about them at all - which is the best compliment for them.

I fitted Continental WinterContact TS 870 215/55 R18 99V XL tyres on Alcar 9373 steel rims. They seem to work fine. I had originally wanted Bridgestone Blizzak LM005s but mytyres.co.uk told me after ordering that they weren't in stock, and recommended the TS 870s instead. The LM005s were the best reviewed winter tyres on https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/202 ... e-Test.htm but the 870s were a close second.

I did a 130 mile journey either side of fitting the tyres. While they weren't round trips, I think the results should be largely comparable. With the original factory Bridgestone Turanza Eco tyres on the way up I got 3.9 miles/kWh. I matched my driving style (max 60mph) and the temperature and weather was basically the same on the way down, so the 3.4 miles/kWh should be primarily down to the tyres. Clearly the increase in rolling resistance does have an effect but I need to be able to make journeys in an area of the country that does actually see snow regularly, and I'd rather charge up a little more often than very efficiently spin into a ditch.

PXL_20230204_101731694.jpg

The Alcar 9373s do work with the original steel wheel trims. I bought some centre hub caps for a VW Caddy off eBay which had the same bolt spacing. Unfortunately they don't have any way to grip on to the wheel, so the fact the original trims do fit fine is a good thing.

I actually quite like the black wheels on the red ID.3, but I'd want to have something covering up the centre at the least.
