Had warning come on randomly last night. I've driven 10k miles over the past year with no issue and had driven over 100 miles yesterday with no indication anything was amiss. the warning came on later in the evening when I went out to plug in.
I've phoned VW roadside assistance who have arranged recovery to the dealership. Presumably whatever the issue is will be fixed under warranty.
Has anyone had similar, and if so is it a quick fix? I'm meant to be driving to the airport on Thursday morning!

No... the car had been sat on the drive for hours, there was no heat or other signs anything was wrong. I think I'd have looked a bit silly when the fire brigade turned up to a dead car.
Car is being recovered this morning so we'll see in due course. I'm relieved it happened at home rather than while I was out yesterday.

I'm not sure you would notice any heat or other signs of a fire before it was too late to save the car. There must be some sensors designed to give early warning and either you have a serious fault that has been picked up, or else a faulty sensor. I agree you would feel a bit stupid when the fire service arrived...but ultimately if no one is going to take notice of the message, what's the point of it? The instruction couldn't be clearer. Good luck!

Whilst you are correct that warning messages like this shouldn’t be ignored, we have to remember VWs track record with their software. It may be a lot better now but I’m sure bugs (maybe like this) still exist.

RE your bold - it's a judgment call isn't it. If it had happened whilst I was driving I would have called the fire brigade immediately, but after the car has been on the drive not being used for hours the risk of spontaneous combustion seemed low. I've already had a previous dealership visit for software issues too so I don't have much faith in what it is telling me.

All sorted now although the dealership have said as they weren't expecting it they don't know when they will be able to have a look at it. I had to explain the issue to them over the phone again.

If it's arrived through VW assist, the dealer is supposed to assess it within 48 hours. If they aren't cooperative it would probably be worth a call back to VW assist in case they will take it up for you.

There is apparently a specific test that needs to be run 3 times a day for 5 days. After that they will be able to determine what the actual problem is and what work is required...
Thankfully I have a mobex vehicle so I am not desperate for it back... but things aren't exactly moving at speed.

“3 times a day for 5 days”? Sounds more like something your doctor would prescribe.
I got the car back today. It was a faulty battery module as I understand it - one of the cells had to be swapped out. I am not technical at all so hopefully that is a coherent explanation.
Not happy with how long it took to fix, but very pleased to have my car back!

I wonder if the fault was with the temperature sensor in the module, to bring up that warning. Glad you got it back anyway!
