The online manual says there is an alphabetical index at the back but it does not seem to be there
Can anyone explain why as a purchaser I was not given a printed instructions manual and why the online version is so bad?

Because the car is designed to be upgraded after you e bought it, over the air. So a printed manual would be quickly out of date.

Because VW don’t do software very well?
Honestly I thought the online manual was about as usable as the printed version; vehicle manuals are always terrible.
