It's a good opportunity. Our 2ID3s were bought 240 miles and 274 miles from home respectively, so I had to charge on the way home on both journeys. Just ask that tge dealership charge the car to 100% prior to your getting there. If you have home charging sorted then if you're sticking to 70mph and not hammering the heating, you should comfortably get to about 180 miles before the car starts harassing you to charge. At that point, just add in about 20kWh to get you comfortably home and charge at home.

For the sake of £200, I'd stay local, but not £1800 (which was my reality at the local Lookers and Pulman dealership groups).

What's the "retail experience" for you? A bunch of flowers and a big VW cloth being dragged off your new car? I'll happily forego that for some significant price difference. I actually got the "reveal" treatment for our Family. However, the artificially lit collection bay didn't show up the 10 or so bird crap scars in the lacquer against the Manganese paint finish.

If it had, I'd have sorted them at home anyway rather than delay my Gloucester to Newcastle trip home!

They will have to get a special quote from a third party as they claim the ID.3 is too heavy for them to transport on their vehicles. Expect a £400+ quote.
Ah, many thanks for the heads up! It's a tough one, the train journey from where I am is 4 hours and 3 changes, then a 4 hour plus drive back including what will be my first experience of public chargers. Not sure I fancy that!
That doesn't sound too dissimilar to my journey for the Life - Newcastle to Evesham on the train via Birmingham and Worcester. It was the day the Siemens trains hairline cracks issue broke out, my journey to Birmingham was one of the few journeys not cancelled! The last leg of my journey was cancelled for the Siemens issue, so I took a bus from Worcester to Evesham and then a taxi from Evesham to the garage - I was there about an hour later than planned - not vad considering the train cancellation.

The MOTO services I have been to all have 125kWh fast charging at a reasonable 30p per kWh. I have used Ferrybridge and Donnington Park services off the M1.

No idea what it is, tbh, hence the quotes.

I'd at least assume it's being treated as a customer, rather than simply an internet customer. After all, it's the place it'll end up if it needs to go in, so I'd hope that it would mean that they would go out of their way to try and ingratiate themselves with me.

My biggest fear would have been travelling hours and finding out that something was amiss with the PDI related stuff that they had missed, and potentially having to waste a day and some money trudging back sans-car.

In my case, the margins were easier. I negotiated £23.8k ish with rubber mats for a base 45kWh LPP, rather than £23.5k with AutoeBid or DTD.

I honestly don’t understand why our order is so long, it’s really getting on my nerves,

Ordered 08/08. Now being told production week 10 2022. When people who ordered a week before us get a production slot 16 weeks earlier, I don’t get it, don’t get me wrong not bitter about the people 😂😂, just can’t understand the difference in production, ours is getting moved back and back and back, no-one can give me an answer as to why.

Is it possible that production of the “base” model is being deprioritised, and if you’d ordered a Family you might get the car sooner?

Obviously there would be a price difference but it’s not the first time VW has delayed base model builds because fewer people buy them. The Golf and Polo in particular have both historically been afflicted.

Not so sure; I've ordered the basiest base model, and had a week 40 slot advised, and not had any further dialogue since. Could be delayed or anything, but as of yet I have not been advised otherwise.

Dealer allocations.

No doubt the busier the dealer you order from, the most likely you are to have a delayed order

I'm honestly not sure either. It could be dealer allocations as mentioned by sausageroll. I previously thought that the timelines wouldn't be so different to others who ordered around the same time but that seems to have changed for people who ordered from August time onwards. The difference in yours is quite dramatic though im surprised its varied that wildly. I could be in for a nasty surprise who knows 🤷🏽 can't be sure until something is confirmed

My dealer seems to be giving me the run around lately, to the point where I’m considering cancelling my order.

I ordered in late July, but unsure what the original order date was, as this was a car the dealer had ordered. At the time, I was told it’d be late September/early October delivery.

I phoned them at the start of September to see if that provisional delivery date was still on, considering the global chip shortage. They told me I had a confirmed build week of week 36 and the estimate was still accurate.
I then phoned a few weeks later to be told that build week had been pushed back to week 37 and at week 38, it was still at the factory.
I next spoke to them on 30/09, only to find out it’s still at the factory!
Finally, I spoke to them yesterday where I was now told that my build week of week 36 was correct, but there’s a 6 week delay at the factory, meaning my car wouldn’t even be built until week 42, with a mid-December delivery estimate!

I’m trying to be patient here, but I purchased the car with that late September/early October delivery time frame in mind and made plans accordingly. I sold my old ICE car weeks ago, thinking I’d only be without a car for a short period, but now taxi costs are racking up!

Given what is happening currently with chip and other component shortages, logistical issues with truck drivers and port delays, you'll have to be a little patient.

Just like you, I sold my car as soon as I did the deal on a car that was built and sat at Emden awaiting shipping. We were all expecting pickup within 3 weeks but it was more like 8 weeks as thecarhadbeen deprioritised on the shipping rots before I'd committed to buying it.

We are a 2 car family, but with a little minor inconvenience, we could easily be a 1 car family as I work from home and only go in once a fortnight.

If I'd waited 6 weeks to sell my car, it would've been worth £1600 more on Motorway.co.uk and I wouldn't have had my wife meaning about the inconvenience of adjusting the drivers seat if I'd been out in her car after work.

Wish I'd waited to sell mine, but hindsight is a great thing and my A4 was sold before nearly new prices started to jump up.

Who's going to be put out most by cancelling your order? Not VW or your dealer it will be You.
The dealer will just sell the car to someone else in minutes probably for more. You've nothing to gain by cancelling as frustrating as it is. It sounds like you are getting updates albeit ones which are erratic, which is better than others and I doubt the dealer is any more in the know than is being communicated.

Right now I am getting ludicrous offers on my wife's Golf GT Estate. in fact, if you decide to cancel give me fair warning as I might phone your dealer ;)

You’re absolutely right and it is something I’d considered. I’d only be cancelling if I had something else lined up, or if another dealer had something sooner.
Someone at my work recently took delivery of their ID3 after phoning around dealers and found a car just coming off the production line, with no customer. This was after waiting around 5 months and getting frustrated, like a lot of us are!

I suspect the world of Amazon Prime has somewhat killed my ability to be patient!

Apart from the government grant and PCP discount did they receive any discount?

Not sure if anyone else has received an update from their VW dealer yet - this came through in the post this morning. Monday will be 5 weeks from when I signed the paperwork for the ID.3 so hoping to have an order number or some further updates soon.

Saw another ID.3 in town yesterday evening and I’m now positively jealous

Sad times! I’ll be chasing for an order number next week as I’d like to start lining up the appropriate home charger and incentives / tariffs with Octopus Energy.
