It always was a Facebook group, that's not the point...

Obviously, they're all businesses, and that's what businesses do. You get a vote in how they exploit you though. Encouraging Facebook and Google's approach isn't the vote I personally make.

I disagree. I wasn't a 1st Edition owner, so that group held nothing I couldn't get elsewhere. Now it does potentially have something I can't get elsewhere - early access to updates once my ID.3 arrives - but that comes at the price of Facebook's nonsense.

All VW would have to do would be to add an option to opt-in to early access software as part of the VW account on their own website. They chose, instead, to force people to use Facebook.

I'm not playing :-)

Who says they'll offer early software updates to the members of the group now they've opened it up?

I am a 1st Edition owner, but wasn't a First Mover.

If you don't want to join, that's your choice.

Crikey, I only posted this as news, trying to do folks a favour who hadn't heard about it, I didn't expect it to turn into such a debate about Facebook privacy etc.

Heh, I read the article last night and now I'd better re-read it in case I misunderstood :-) (impression was that First Mover Club was now available to anybody, not just 1st Edition owners. But you had to sign up through Facebook which I'm allergic to)

The allergic reaction caused me to stray off-topic, apologies :-)

"VIN fallout" ? :-)

What could possibly go wrong with sharing your VIN via Facebook ?

Damn, I did it again. Sorry OP.....
