Was that directed at me about Apple Tags?
No. Just a question. When I have parked my car somewhere I am not familiar with, I have always been able to locate it's whereabouts with the Map app on my iPhone.

Isn't that the whole point of this thread?

No, the We Connect ID. app tells you where the device running the app is, so you can then use the app to find a charger.

Yes, I've always been able to get a location whenever I've looked in the Find My app.

This is a genius idea and literally one that never occurred to me, despite having an Apple Tag thing attached to my car keys

I just looked up airtags. I'm not convinced they're suitable for this purpose, only for things that could become lost (as opposed to stolen.) From the apple website:

"AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If someone else’s AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice it’s travelling with you and send you an alert. After a while, if you still haven’t found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know it’s there.

Of course, if you happen to be with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a train with other passengers who have AirTag, don’t worry. These alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner."

So, if your car thief has an iPhone, he will be told it's there and can chuck it out.

It waits (at least) 24 hours before starting to beep…. Long enough I’d suspect

And his/her iPhone will only be alerted if you mark your tag as lost. If you keep it in tracking mode they won’t know.

If you just want to quickly know where your car is they’re ideal.

Or you can disconnect the speaker, there are videos and articles online on how to do so.

Apple Maps only tells you when it detects you’ve parked your car, because it records the location when you disconnect CarPlay. If it gets stolen then Apple Maps has no way of knowing where it’s going.

"because it records the location when you disconnect CarPlay". Are you sure about that? My previous Ford didn't have Carplay and it still found the car.

It works for either Bluetooth or CarPlay. So if your Ford had a Bluetooth telephone connection, the "Parked Car" feature would still work and store a pin when the phone/car connection ended.

Did it track the car if you drove it without it connected to your phone (even via Bluetooth)?

I don't know. It was always bluetooth connected.
It's correct that the car can't be tracked whilst it's moving but the thieves would have to stop sometime. I am not knocking the Apple tags by the way, I just don't know if that's the best solution.
