Hi all

Just a heads up, the discounted price of £199 which used to be available to Octopus customers for an Ohme Go charging cable has just increased to £299, which is a bit of a shame.

They will however honour the old price if you made an enquiry about the offer via the web form, before November 1st (though only if you take up the offer within 7 days of them sending the follow-up email in response to the web form submission).

I vaguely recalled that I'd seen somewhere that the £199 offer was due to end in October, but I couldn't find that information online when I actually went to check.

I'm waiting for a quote from our local sparky, for a commando socket installation, but I took a punt and made the enquiry about the Ohme cable on the 31st, so managed to sneak in just in time.

Love the Ohme in-line ('smart') charger. Lucky to grab one in September for £199 via Octopus, with 32A commando plug. Plan to have a 32A interlocked Commando socket installed on the wall in an inconspicuous location to plug the Ohme into. Before then, I have a 32-amp-Commando-socket-to-16-amp-commando-plug and a 16-amp-Commando-socket-to-3pin-13-amp-plug cable set-up. For now, I'm using this combo as a smart granny-charger, after contacting Ohme to reduce the operating current from 32A to 10A. It now pulls approx 8.3 amps on each charge - effectively acting as a 2kWh charger. I could also use the 3-pin/16-amp commando combo on camp-sites 🏕, although this certainly won't be until 2022 now 🥶

The Ohme app allows a max value of cost per kWh to be set for a charge, so I've set the max value at 5p per kWh (Octopus Go, 00:30-04:30) and just plug into the ID.3 every night. It then automatically kicks in at 00:30 until 04:30 (during the Octopus Go 5p per kWh window) and adds about 12% charge during those hours. Cost is about 40p per charging session to add just under 30 miles at this rate, so not massively efficient but easily manageable.

I'll get the 32A Commando socket, with earth rod & RCD, installed in the near future and instruct Ohme to increase the charger back to 32 amps so I can use it as a 7kWh charger - this configuration should pull about 29 amps. I'm guessing at adding 35%-40% charge (84-96 miles) during the same hours? (but also then increasing the charge cost to £1.40 - so it's the usual trade-off of charge speed versus charge cost)

The most surprising thing about it though - it gives the option to easily remove the whole charging hardware from the wall so my house doesn't look like I have a Ghostbusters proton-pack permanently strapped to the wall. Chuck it in the nice blue bag in the boot and the job's a good un. Get it out when needed, wherever there's a 3-pin, 13-amp/16-amp commando socket available. Perfect.

Quick tip - put a towel in the blue bag. Can be used to wipe down wet Ohme hardware after rain and help get rid of dreaded in-car condensation. Change it every week though and air the bag when conditions are dry.

Quick question....I have a fixed Ohme charger ( my ID3 arrives Tuesday) I've set the max charging rate in the Ohme app to 6.5p hoping this will result in the car charging automatically between 00.30 and 04.30.
Did you have to change any settings in the car itself re charging?

Set the max charge limit (80%/85%/100%/etc.) as preferred in-car and let the Ohme app deal with the timings.
I'm still using the Ohme 'unfixed' charger as a 10amp/3kWh granny charger, so I've also enabled 'Reduce AC charg. current' in-car.

I have 5p set as the max value allowed to charge in the Ohme app, so once the Ohme cable is plugged into the car, the car goes into charge mode but the Ohme charger just sits there showing the 'smart charge' setting (rotating LED's) until the per kWh rate is 5p or lower. It then starts to charge the car when that rate is met - also between 00:30 and 04:30 for me. It stops charging when the per kWh rate rises above 5p (at 04:30) or when the chosen max in-car charge limit is met. It's worked flawlessly for me so far, but of note: data reporting of the last charge is only updated in the Ohme app once you physically unplug the charger from the car (not when it stops charging)

You can also enter your Octopus account/meter details into the online Octocomparison service (https://octocomparison.co.uk/comparison) to see the effect on the electric costs that the car charge had. There are also some very interesting data points in that service to look at!

I presume that if you need to charge on the non 5p rate if simply increase the max rate to say 99p and plug in?

Or you can just override the current scheduled settings to “max charge”, yup

In my case (Ohme app on Android) - I select the menu option -> charge schedule-> settings, then disable the 'x.xx pence per kWh' option.

The Ohme charger will then charge the car as soon as plugged in until as full as the in-car selected max-charge is reached.
