Does anyone have the bike rack tow bar? What bike racks do you use. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Yes, I do. Not got a rack yet though.

Had an Altura Strada on my old car. Very nice rack, easy to mount and the tilt down mechanism was a bonus. Now looking at a Buzzrack Scorpion for my eBike.

I've ordered it. Plan to use a Thule EasyFold XT 3, though I've not bought this yet. Can't wait actually, lifting three bikes on to the top of a car is a total pain.

I’ve ordered mine with the bike rack prep and always bought Thule racks in the past but I intend to have a look at the vw rack for the id3, apparently it’s very light 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hello,

I may be able to answer most of your questions. As a tow hitch I have the one from VW, but you should know its load capacity ain't much. I think it's about 65ish kg of capacity. But it's plenty enough for my needs.

As a rack I own a Thule 925 Velocompact 2. As someone working in a Bikeshop I was able to play with loads of racks, including different models from Thule or Eufab. I ended up with the Thule as it was exactly what I was looking for, meaning a 2 slots e-bike capable rack. With the 927 Velocompact 3 (3 slots), the 925 Velocompact 2 offers the best value. They are foldable, come with locks as standard and are compatible with a loading ramp.

Here is mine in action :

It depends of the type of bikes you have and how long you plan on keeping the rack. My very first rack, a 20 years old Thule, is till going strong and parts such as the rubber strap are still available.

Thanks. That looks great. Have just bought the Thule XT3. I've always had Thule roof bars so know how reliable and easy there are to use. Just waiting for my car to turn up now!

The XT3 is a great rack and it never disappoints ! Though it is quite of a heavy one by itself sitting at 45ish lbs. Yet as long as you don't plan to use the rack with e-bikes it should be more than fine !

Do you or anyone else know the max weight the tow hitch can take? I want to put 3 x 25kg bikes on so a total weight of 75kg

Max weight is 75kg, but you have to include the rack in your calculation. The Thule EasyFold XT3 for instance is 23kg, so you’re left with 52kg to play with.

Well it looks like your needs will outweigh VW's tow hitch limit :(.

Mine says up to 3 bikes and 75kg. A full suspension e-bike sits around 25kg, and you have to count the weight of the rack as well (20kg for a decent 3 bikes rack).

What you can do is loosing the batteries from the bikes, saving around 7ish lbs per bike. It ain't much but it's a start.

Thanks for the replies. Should be able to get it under the 75kg as I just weighed each bike and they are 14kg each. Don’t know why I thought they were 25kg. Going to add it to my order.

The tow bar cost €1100 but used my old Thule bike rack. Make sure that light socket is mounted “sideways” to allow for the twist, otherwise more cutting has to be done!

What do you mean by “make sure light socket is mounted sideways to allow for the twist”? I have ordered hitch from factory (not dealer/retrofit) so how will it come? Could you share a picture of what you mean please?
