Can anyone explain the advice to only charge to 80%? If this is set in stone, it appears to makes the much vaunted maximum range a complete fiction, unless this is published figure is based on an 80% charge.

What is the consequence if you charge to 100%? (Apart from the obvious fact you can drive further!)

If you have regularly been charging to 100% does switching to 80% for regular charges undo any consequence of the 100% charges?

Can you do mostly 80% charges and the occasional 100% charge when you need more range (or more comfort about the stated range?)

Thanks as always for any guidance.

Those are general recommendations. If you don't need to charge to 100%, don't is the general answer. If you've got a range busting journey then do charge to 100%, but only complete that charge shortly before you intend to start that long journey.

You can't undo any higher than necessary wear if you've been habitually charging to 100%, but at the end of the day, those warranty terms of 70% minimum original capacity at 8 years/100k miles will be based on the absolute worst case use of the car (pretty much wholly 100%-5% charge and depletion). I wouldn't worry about what you've already done, just charge and use (generally) within a 20-80% window when your usage suits.

VW advise not taking it below 40% in the Winter, but I'm personally taking it down to a out 20%. Given how much hammer the range takes in the Winter with battery pre-heating, we'd only get 2 days per charge going 40-80%, meaning one of our cars would be on charge every single night (we have 2 ID3s).

Audi S3 - because I hate rapid charging for long distance driving.

Thanks for the clear advice.

Is a daily 60 mile motorway trip, with 60 mile return the same day long distance?

Can you charge at home?

At 120 miles, you won’t make it there and back twice, but would easily make it there and back once setting out with 80%

I would just plug in each night prior to when you need to make that journey and get it back to 80% - don’t overthink it.

once you can charge at home things become so much easier (from someone who relied on public charging for the first 6 weeks of ownership)

my ID.3 is showing about 160 miles range on a charge to about 90% at the moment

you'll not want to let it get below about 30 miles of range before charging again, so actual usable range at the moment is 130 miles

for me, that's charging up twice a week

Not wishing to hi-jack the thread but does anyone know if VW are intending to allow us to change the readout of the GOM from miles to battery percentage?

I always chuckle when I see it, especially given the context within the technology.
