How can they get away with so little tread on a new tyre?
I’ve heard it said that that it’s because their compound is so hard that it’s supposed to last just as long as softer tyres with a proper tread depth.

My own personal opinion is that any car equipped with Bridgestones is likely to kill its owner before they wear out, and dead men famously tell no tales…

If mine comes with Bridgestones, first thing I’ll be doing is putting Michelins on each corner, and hang the additional expense.
Just to let you know mine came with Bridgestones.

Can’t we asked which tyres we want from the dealer before we drive it?

They go on at the factory, not the dealership. You get whatever the factory puts on. There’s no “choice”.

So we get 100’s of options when we are buying the car but have no way of picking the tyres? That’s doesn’t make sense especially when the Bridgestone seem so rubbish.

If you're getting 18" wheels, it's almost a cert you'll get Bridgestone Turanzas on them.

Hi all
I’ve been reading this tyre thread with interest as I will probably have to change my tyres in the spring. I’ve never had any issues with any tyre on any of my cars, and certainly not felt in danger of killing my self or any one else so I really don’t understand some of the comments like the one below

This seems extreme and if under ‘normal’ driving you feel that unsafe then maybe you should contact a driving safety agency to take it further I’m sure they would love to hear what you have to say.

Happy and safe driving

Apart from my first ever car, a 1970 Hillman Imp, that had crossply tyres(!), I'm with you... Having had and driven my ID.3 since August, fitted with Bridgestone tyres, I've got absolutely no complaints with them at all. As for feeling unsafe...

The factory fit Bridgestones haven’t given me cause for concern as yet, they’ve only done 2.5k miles, but if they affect the drive let alone make us feel unsafe they’ll be changed. Had a sports car shod with factory Pirelli P Zeros, they had plenty of tread but had gone hard and ruined the drive via ridiculous understeer. Swapped them for Michelin PS4S, night and day different, don’t see that situation yet with our ID.3.

I wouldn't say you're guaranteed to crash, but there are so many better choices that VW could've made for tyres, in a market where it is not expected to change to Winter wheels unless you live in the back of beyond.

You certainly have to drive with an increase in caution with the Bridgestones in cooler or wet weather that wouldn't be necessary with any other top tier tyre manufacturer. They truly are crap tyres for being pitched as top tier, but they definitely feel much worse on a FWD car for rampant tramping. If VW need to save some money, I'd rather have Hankooks or Falkens than Bridgestones.

Every time I've had Bridgestones and swapped them out, the feel and confidence in the car has improved markedly. I don't fling the ID3 around like I used to fling the Golf R/GTD or Polo GTIs around (which came on Bridgestones and were swapped out quickly - mainly for unbearable tramping on all but the R). Even on the Golf R, there was a twitching on all bends like itwas on the verge of breaking traction that was non-existant when the Potenza RE050s were swapped out for Michelin PSS.

For our first Polo GTI, I was exiting a huge roundabout (so large that the curve in the road was so slight as to almost be straght), and at half throttle, the back end kicked out quite severely, on a bone dry road and 12C ambient temp, after having driven 6.miles already. The Golf GTD in the outside lane of the roundabout went past me at twice the speed, with no drama. Those Bridgestones were gone the next day. When our second GTI came a year later and was delivered to my place of work, I drove it 2 miles to Costco and had them swapped straight out.

Now that I will be keeping a close eye on this, shortlist replacement 215/50 R19 T (93) tyres has started off with Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance C+ and Michelin e.Primacy. Any views/experience? Others to consider? Also, both those tyres have a puncture resistant version (SealTech and Selfseal respectively), worth it?

In ID3 18" wheel size, I doubt you're going to get close to Goodyear Efficient grip at £81 a corner when Costco have their next Goodyear offer on.

In 215/50 R19 size both those tyres are double that on blackcircles, but price isn’t my main concern, just interested to know if there’s a forum favourite replacement tyre. There very much is on the forum for my ICE, Michelin PS4S with Goodyear Eagle F1 acceptable.

I'd say the Michelin variant is almost always marginally superior to equivalent Goodyear for any given tyre type in overall performance and wear rate, but I wouldn't pay more than 10% extra for the Michelin equivalent (IMO PS4 is more equivalent to F1 Asy 5, with PS4S being more in line with F1 Supersports).

I agree fully. Also IIRC the EfficientGrips are supposed to be a better “all-season” tyre than the e-Primacy (which leans more toward summer than winter) and at those <£90/corner prices I would be tempted to climb off my Michelin high horse too.

I’m not an expert in tyres so what are your options on Avon tyres, they are more reasonably priced than the other big names

In the second tier tyre brands like Avon, I'd rather go Falken, but to be honest, I wouldn't cheap out on tyres. I've had Falkens before because the Audi garage replaced the tyres on my nearly new A4 before I collected it (front Conti 6 were under 3mm) and they were fine. It would almost certainly be Michelin or Goodyear for me to replace.
