Just coming up to a year with the ID3 Life and just had a VED demand from the DVLA for £0.

Why do they even bother? They have insurance databases to ensure everyone has insurance, which used to be one of the checks at VED/MOT time.

Also, the car is starting to harass me for a service, as the service interval appears to have been erroneously set to 1 year by the supplying (non local) dealer. Looks like OBD11 can't reset it.

I'm sure the service reminder is going to start to grate, especially if I have to live with it for 13 months. Doubt my local dealer will reset it for nothing, and the supplying dealer is 243 miles away. Maybe if update 2.4 needs a dealership visit I can ask them to do it then.

True that would be irritating. But it was an error to set it at 1 year so hopefully someone will correct it for free….
Reminds me of the ‘fond’ days of 0564 when the steering wheel heater used to come on full blast each and every day. And occasionally wouldn’t turn off until the ID3 had its usual few hours nap…

They'll be keeping it standard for when they start taxing BEVs etc :(

In contrast, I paid my tax by DD for 6 months on my current ICE car last time, because originally I was meant to have the ID3 about now. Didn't get any kind of letter about it, just an email to say it would be DDd again on April 1st, and no way to change it because none of the numbers on the email were the right ones to use as a reference... Hopefully when I eventually sell the ICE that'll stop the DDs too...

The car keeps it's tax free status for life (or that has been the previous concensus for low CO2 ICE cars exempt from new between 2013 and 2017, that are still VED free now). VED is supposed to be introduced for new BEVs registered from 2025. Its highly unlikely they'll apply VED to existing BEVs that were sold as VED exempt when new. They should just have a system tag on exempt cars to not send a demand to pay £0.

There are more VED 'exemptions' than just EV's and they've always worked with an annual demand of £0. One such example is moving the vehicle class to "DISABLED", which is similarly exempt from VED. Not only do disabled people need to pay £0 for VED, they have to provide annual proof of continued exemption in the form of an entitlement certificate issued by the DWP, which is doubly annoying.

Expecting the Government to take a common sense approach and/or make the populace's lives a little bit easier is a bit like expecting altruism from cats, or objectivity from Tesla fanbois 😂

As I understand it, BEVs are not exempt from VED but currently rated at £0. I expect that this will quite likely go up in future; taxes being taxes. Unless and until road pricing is instituted of course.

My mate bought our 2015 A1 1.6TDI, which had £0 VED. When too nany cars were getting £0 for being under 100g CO2 per km, in 2017, new examples of those same cars started attracting VED again, but those used ones rated at £0 still retain that status and likely always will. I'd assume the same approach for all pre 2025 BEVs sold new with a £0 BEV status.

You’re right in that tax rate changes have not generally been backdated. We have another car which is on a £20 tax but also an older diesel on which the annual rate has increased.
