Experts, is it okay to use a granny charger with an extension cable (I vaguely recall seeing advice not to)? Does anybody do it? I am thinking as an occasional emergency, not regular use.

I’d advise against using general purpose extension leads but these are supposed to be safer:

I often do it with my leaf, often times out of the window of a premier inn :) I bought a 30m weather proof extention and its the best thing i ever did buy. Remember though to ALWAYS fully unwind the extention, even if you are only using it to gain 1m of distance. If you dont fully unwind it, it acts as an inductor and gets very, very hot. Fully unwound its perfectly safe electrically. You do, of course, still have to consider tripping hazards and things.
What you cant do is extend the other end of the granny charger, the one that goes into the car, the design of the type 2 cables wont let you daisy chain them, so you need to extend from the 13a end.

I think its ok providing emergency doesn't become the norm. I also bought an emergency extension from Screwdix that is IP54 rated. (Pic attached)
I decided not to exceed 10m because of hazards with routing. You have to draw the line somewhere right. Its important to take a look at the socket you are plugging into. If the socket looks as if it's had a hard life, brown heat marks on the face, feeling loose when you insert the plug then its best not to use it and find a public charger instead.
If you are using an extension you have to be happy that you can walk away from it for several hours and maybe up to 12-16 hours.
Emergency for me is when there is no other viable alternative.

A Toughleads extension cable, fully unwound when powered, would be my recommendation.

I have one of the tough leads extensions and it’s been fine. Though - I wouldn’t say it’s a solution for regular (daily - weekly) charging. Fine for every now and then. I got one with an rcd plug (belt and braces Eh!) but wouldn’t next time - as it gets in the way of some sockets.

They do an in-line rcd now which is a great addition.
