Can you alter when Android Auto turns itself on?

At the moment, Android Auto turns on almost immediately when I get in my car, as Bluetooth connects immediately after I sit down. The lack of any delay is nice but I often find this annoying because my preference when navigating somewhere is to select the route on my phone, then connect it to the car screen. When Android Auto is running, the phone refuses to show Google Maps on its own screen, so I don't get the opportunity to select a route on my phone after getting in the car.
It's even more annoying when I use my other car, because as soon as the phone connects to Bluetooth it starts the android auto app and effectively bricks itself - even though that car doesn't have Android Auto! So I can no longer use Google maps on my phone in that car at all, unless I turn Bluetooth off.
I'm sure I have a memory of setting Android Auto to start up on Bluetooth connection when we first got the ID3, and what I want to do now is change that so that it starts up slightly later. However I can't find the setting anywhere. The app gives an option to start up when directed by the car, but I can't find such a setting in the car. The initial setup with the ID3 obviously did something to the phone settings because it changed the way it behaves in my other car.
I'd prefer not to revert to connecting the phone to Android Auto manually every time.
Any ideas?
Many thanks!

Not really a scientific answer but I have a similar sort of problem with my wife getting in the car with me. Her phone seems to take over when I get in the car on my own Android auto only starts if I ask it to.
The difference in the two of us is that I regularly (I mean daily at least) kill all running apps whilst I know that is not the case with my wife's phone.

On the Android Auto info online https://www.androidcentral.com/how-use-new-android-auto you do have settings to control how it starts including an ask to start option.

Edit: There's some interesting tweaks here too https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/android-auto-tweaks/

I don't have an ID3 yet to help with car settings, but if you can't work it out another way then a step up from manual activation would be to use something like the Tasker app. You could create a task that would be triggered by the bluetooth connection being made to the car and then have an X second wait until loading Android Auto.

Great, that second link has solved it, thanks. I actually needed to change a setting on the phone for Google Driving Mode, as opposed to Android Auto. Not very intuitive, I'd never have worked it out. It now prompts me when it connects to Bluetooth before entering driving mode, so when using my other car without Android Auto, I can just tell it not to do so.
