The data plans available are:

* 2GB/30days/€6.77
* 5GB/90days/€14.57
* 25GB/365days/€70.18

From CubicTelecom. (Not yet working, needs a future software update in the car)
(The remote control of the car from the app is already working, but you can’t yet use any streaming services in the car, or use the car as a wifi hotspot)

2GB/30days/€6.77 is very affordable. Wi-Fi hotspot in cars for passengers is a must-have in 2021. The easiest way to create a hotspot is to use a router or signal amplifier - https://www.myamplifiers.com/en-ca/. They allow passengers to use up to seven devices.

There are two data streams into the ID cars, a bit confusing

There is one for VW, e.g. updates etc. I believe this is free for a number of years (havent checked, is it 3 ?)

There is another one for data you use, e.g. internet radio, hot spot, etc.
If you sign up currently in the UK via the VW app, you can get a 1GB a month tariff free.
This is fine for me as it just covers the internet radio we use

I had my wifi-only iPad in my car once a few months ago while at a 50kW charger for a while, I tethered it through my phone which already has enough spare data at a much lower cost.

If I really wanted internet radio in the car, I'd use the TuneIn app through Apple CarPlay - again using the data on my phone.

I struggle to see a use case for the in-car data packages.

Surely the wireless carplay means that she doesn't have to faff around with carplay as it will automatically come on when you get into the car.

The data plans are very expensive.

Does CarPlay just fire up automatically? In our admittedly short ownership (pick up a few days ago) it seems that we have to choose CarPlay from the main screen each time. In fact my wife claims it wasn’t an option for her yesterday and that’s despite setting it all up the day before.

Yes, when you first start the car the icon on the infotainment screen will say App-Connect for a bit, then switch to saying Apple CarPlay. As soon as it has done that, just press it.
