Major Battery Issue
Hey forum,
I had the 3.2 update about a month ago and found that battery module 7 needs replacing. I did suspect this since on an 80% charge I was getting 150 miles and 100% getting 180 miles, so I knew the battery wasn't right anyway.
After the 3.2 update/module check, I went on holiday to Cornwall (from Wrexham) using a few fast chargers throughout the week and never saw the car charge faster than 40kW and range slowly starting to reduce on a full charge (by the end of the week 100% gave me 160 miles).
Since coming back, the range I'm now getting for a charge has reduced further with 80% showing 120 miles last week, and this morning it overcharged to 86% with 105 miles. The amount of energy being put into the battery is very low too with 15kWh added last night going from 18%-86%.
I'm going to call VW assist as I cannot use the car on certain days now because of this issue.
Has anyone else had an experience like this and what is VW assist like?

VW assist were good with me. They need to believe you genuinely don't think the car is driveable. Have you got the error message up? That would help.
Have a look beforehand where your nearest battery competence centre is if you can. I would recommend having the car recovered there so that you have direct contact with the people doing the work, unless they have a big backlog. But it'll mean having to collect your car there when it's finished.
Don't let them take it to Johnsons Solihull.

Thanks Sidehaas,
Error message is showing since the update.
I called Assist today but though the general enquiries, who then sent me to VW customer services who have now raised a case number. Apparently Wrexham (most local dealer) need to take the car and arrange the battery module replacement (plus some minor warranty repairs) with the nearest centre being Chester (note that Wrexham never booked me in as they're planning to become a battery centre themselves).
I'll call them tomorrow and hopefully get a courtesy car asap, but I don't think they have anything electric so I'll request they reimburse additional fuel costs since I shouldn't be out of pocket as a result.

So I've been passed around the houses a bit with Wrexham claiming they can't do anything (no recovery truck or courtesy car) and I should go straight to Chester. Quite useless.
Having called Chester, they have a 30 car backlog (estimated August fix) and no courtesy car. They advised for me to call Wrexham back to send all details of the battery issue over before they can book anything in.
Instead of phonecall ping pong I called Stockport who also don't have a courtesy car and a July/August wait (part of Inchcape Group like Chester), however the staff member is going to speak with the manager about next steps since I highlighted I'm on the limit of range for some of my routine trips.
All in all, not much help at all so far but hopefully Stockport can sort me out as well as some warranty repairs including puddle lights, dash and the occasional clunk from the rear when coming to a stop/pulling away. The car is on charge tonight (Today I got 47 miles travelled from 86% to 20% which shows the scale of the issue with 50 miles left). I may just call VW Assist for a recovery truck if the range reduces further.
It's so frustrating as with working in Climate Change I'm really trying to advocate for these cars but this experience isn't helping.

I thought you were going to try VW Assist, did they refuse to take the car? If you go via them, the AA come and recover the car, you can usually agree with them where it gets taken, VW Assist will sort you a hire car (for me it was from the local Enterprise) and then the car will get taken straight to a dealer and added to the queue with other cars that are already on site. You do not even talk to any dealer in this process until the car is already with them.Benjiturp wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 10:10 pm So I've been passed around the houses a bit with Wrexham claiming they can't do anything (no recovery truck or courtesy car) and I should go straight to Chester. The only downside is your hire car probably won't be as nice as a courtesy car, I got a 2019 Golf Plus, but it was worth it for getting everything sorted quickly.
Bad news that Chester now has a big backlog, it was clear two months ago.

I originally spoke with their customer services, but having charged last night, the car overcharged again to 86% with 105 miles of range. I reset the long term trip to see what would happen and it showed 88 miles, so I've called VW Assist and the guy turned up within an hour. He's been great explaining the battery tech and he's ran diagnostics confirming that module 7 is dead.
He's now referred me to Chester to take the car in and explained how I am entitled to an electric hire car (VW policy updated to this a couple of months ago), fingers crossed for an ID.7
So I'll be taking that in today work permitting.
Have to say 10/10 for VW assist, especially considering there's no charge either. Apparently Customer Satisfaction scores for VW is quite low so they're throwing everything at it to increase their ratings.

Thanks MotMot,
Yeah they've been great and helps to cut through to the dealers to commit to VW's policies, etc. I'm just waiting to hear back from enterprise regarding my hire car, hopefully that's today and ready for my usual Thursday childcare and work runs.

Quick update, Chester has taken the ID.3 in today and I've given them a list of other warranty checks mentioned above
Also annoyingly I scuffed the bottom corner of the rear bumper yesterday so I've requested a repair quote while the car is in. Not sure of time frames yet but no rush.
Enterprise has provided a Taigo which really makes me appreciate the ID.3
but I know I'm entitled to an EV otherwise I'll be over £150 a month down paying for petrol, so I need to chase VW to instruct enterprise.
Really glad the car is finally in and hopefully when it's returned (whenever that is) all will be very well with full range. VW Assist and Enterprise have been excellent, dealerships less helpful so far but we will see.

Hi all,
I just wanted to give an in update on this issue, and I'm now much much happier.
So as mentioned I had the battery fault detected at 3.2 update, and following a long distance holiday and fast charging, the battery lost range very quickly to a point where I couldn't use the ca. As a result VW assist booked me into Chester and I was bumped up the waiting list. As well as the Taigo, I was provided a Mustang Mach-e as a cover car (it's nicer inside but it's too big, too flashy and the ID.3 drives better).
Chester had the car for about a month and replaced module 7 and fixed the puddle lights. I've had the car back for 600 miles now and thankfully over that time the GOM has gradually increased at each charge, and this morning I saw 200 miles at 80% which is as hoped, plus I no longer see quick drops in % like I used to.
The issue really did ruin my confidence in the car and overshadowed the whole experience but I'm now feeling much better about it and enjoying the car as I should... Bird poo however seems to have gone through the ceramic coating leaving a dull mark, it was cleaned within a few hours so I'll be having words about that (impenetrable my bum).

Yeah, coatings do nothing to protect against that. I once tried to claim on the included insurance, only to be told that the paint damage was evidence I'd not cleaned the bird poo off quickly enough. I did ask "so in which circumstances could I claim?" to which I never got a reply.
I've since invested in a dual action polisher, which easily removes any marks when they appear.

These companies just bat you off all the time with excuses because you can't substantiate you take the gear possible care, useless aren't they.
I have some autoglym polish so I'll give that a try to see if the marks buff out

Unfortunately last Friday (5th) i got an error on my screen sayiing "electric drive not working correctly", my car was 3 years old yesterday.
I contacted VW assist who actually came round within the hour, and after plugging in his lap-top for approx 45 mins he advised me that my battery had faulty cell(s) and I should contact my local dealer, from whom I bought it.
This was a waste of time as they ( Hayseldens ) told me as it was driveable,( told by assist man it was safe to do so ), and they were incapable of doing battery work, I would have to take it to JCT 600 in Sheffield. This info was relayed to VW assist and nice lady said she would sent a copy of their technicians report to JCT 600 and it would arrive within a few minutes.
I phoned them at 10.30 Saturday morning and whoever I spoke too told me they had no knowledge of said mail, and the told me I must present the car to them for their technician to evaluate the problem himself before making any suggestions about remedial work involved.
Obviously they MUST know better than the VW assist tech, although they would, I assume, be using the same software on a different lap-top, and so I now have to wait until they assess my car before giving me a repair date.
I am definitely not a happy bunny, as when my car had its update to 3.2 along with a battery check last year, they couldnt look at it for 7 months after I was informed to take it into them. I went to Vertu Leeds who were able to do it within 3 months, so I may be changing to Vertu and asking Assist to send the details to them once JCT give me a date

My ID.3 Pro Performance also had an ominous electric drive error which turned out to be a bad cell in one of the battery modules. The car is out of warranty but the battery warranty is still valid. I took it to my local VW dealer here in Finland and they replaced the battery module which had the faulty cell. It took two days I think. Zero cost to me.C Nile wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 8:57 am Unfortunately last Friday (5th) i got an error on my screen sayiing "electric drive not working correctly", my car was 3 years old yesterday.

Speaking to the VW assist guy who came to my house, they have all the diagnosis training and instruments that the garage had, so I'm wondering if the garage has fobbed you off (some have quite long waiting lists for the module replacement). As my car became unusable, which seems quite rare for this issue, VW Chester had to take mine in and did their own diagnosis.C Nile wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 8:57 am Unfortunately last Friday (5th) i got an error on my screen sayiing "electric drive not working correctly", my car was 3 years old yesterday.

Bit odd the 3.2 check didn't pick up the fault, I've not read about that happening but others might.
Hopefully you haven't had the issues I did, but *touch wood*, since the repair the car has been spot on with range and charging speeds

My 3.2 update and battery check was done September last year and supposedly no fault found, so I wonder why it has reared its ugly head now

So the car went to JCT600 on Thursday and the guy said it may take longer than I was advised, but the wife and I wombled off to nearby retail park, and when we returned later car was stood outside waiting for us.
Andrew then informed us the car had been connected to VW servers to run assessment only for it to return a "no fault" status and the drive error message on dashboard had disappeared. He advised us it had been put down as a glitch and we would be fine now.
Only time will tell, but I have a report sheet for what was done to the car if I should get the same problems later.

Is the battery check part of the 3.2 update or is it a separate process that needs to be run afterwards?
By that, I mean, should I have asked/do I need to ask VW to check my battery or will it have been done when it was updated to 3.2?
