Installing a dashcam
I have a NextBase dashcam to install in the next few days. Suggestions on which fuse I should piggyback off along with routing for the cable to behind the rear view mirror would be welcome.
Fingers crossed it will be easier than on the Golf 7 in which it was previously installed.

Good to see how you solve this
next base used to need a switched 12v. Are they now connected to power via USB cable? Do the USB parts stay live when the ignition is off? How many USB parts does ID3 have? And where are they.
I was surprised no one has got there first in helping you out. In my opinion having a camera is as vital as having insurance policy, as there are some plonkers out there.

Hi
I wired my next base by piggy back on the rear wiper fuse as it is “switched” when the ignition comes on.
Did not put mine in the centre as the area is shaded for sensors etc. Put mine top of screen on near side (it doesn’t both the wife there). Then easy to run the wires behind the door seal.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
What a great car

Bump on this thread.
Just looking to install the dash cam from my old car - and it uses a cigarette lighter attachment through to a USB-b plug (might be mini-B - not completely up on my USB configurations!). Options are to
A. hardwire somehow (rather not - and I don't want it on all the time, just when I'm driving) -
B. thread a wire from the USB-C adaptors in the centre console under the seat, up the A or B pillar usually under the door seal or edge of the door seal and tuck under roof lining to near windscreen. This would mean getting a USB-C to micro-B lead (£15 for a 4m one - not impossible).
C. Use the existing lead and plug into the cigarette ighter socket in the boot, run up the inside of the trim on the C pillar (the back one?) and along the trim at the base of the roof lining all the way to the front....
Interested in trying C - any advice against? Obviously don't want to mess about with any airbag locations/important bits of trim etc...

There is (apparently) a Nextbase kit that piggy backs onto a fuse.

No knowledge or experience of the product, just recall finding it when previous similar discussion arose.

Ours are installed using that kit.G43FAN wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 1:04 pm There is (apparently) a Nextbase kit that piggy backs onto a fuse.

A gentle warning: whichever way you choose to install it, do make sure you take the wiring behind the airbag in the A pillar.MotMot wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 9:57 am Bump on this thread.

Had a good look today - and the fit between trim panels and the roof lining is really tight (as in good build) but unfortunately means I can’t easily squeeze a wire in where I have on previous cars.
Any airbag issues running it under the door seal on the A or B pillar until the end of the trim and roof lining?

I'm not totally sure on where the airbag stops (our dealer installed the cameras on both our ID3s FOC) but there have been instances of installations that have crossed the airbag with all the consequences that that would involve should it need to deploy.MotMot wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 6:02 pm Had a good look today - and the fit between trim panels and the roof lining is really tight (as in good build) but unfortunately means I can’t easily squeeze a wire in where I have on previous cars.

There is a video doing the rounds that might help you.

I wonder if there is some way to tap power from the front roof wiring loom for a dashcam ? :
