Will I or won’t I?

Post by Scratch » Tue Jul 20, 2021 9:15 pm

Had another test drive today. Now don’t know what to do. Fantastic car to drive. Discussed availability but like everyone else, not much to choose from. Wife wanted a certain colour. They found one for September delivery but it’s got extras I originally wasn’t looking at and has taken the price up by 3K more than I had bargained for. We can afford it but it’s a lot money for a first foray into EV cars. HELP! They also gave me a very good trade in for my exiting ICE car.

What help are you looking for?
What are the extras?
Brand new EVs come at a price, only you can decide if it’s worth it…

Maybe I'm trying to get someone to convince me?
Extras:
Heat pump
2-3 pin charging cable (not sure why this is included. It's not actually fitted to the car is it?)
Metallic paint
18 inch alloys

Your last point - yes, I know!

I wouldn't pay for a 3pin granny charger as a compulsory extra vecause it's simply an accessory you purchase separately.

Metallic paint? Unless you were set to pick Moonstone Grey, I wouldn't consider it zn extra. Alloy wheels? Many people do, I made sure both our ID3s had East Derry wheels, did not want steel wheels. Heat pump? I wouldn't in amillion years option this freely, but if you're prepared to pay for an option you don't want, to jump the queue then fair enough. I've done that before.

The 3pin granny charger can be quite useful. Its actually not bad and can add 50% over night. I am still using mine whilst I wait for my delayed Zappi implementation.
I wouldnt buy with the car, as I dont want it as part of my finance deal. Actually my garage has all accessories on order due to demand, so I ended up getting a granny cable from Amazon

I wouldnt dismiss the heat pump. The science is sound and so is VW's implementation. It saves 10% in a cold winter, and that is worth it on its own IMHO. Further software updates will make it more efficient. Note that the tests I have read give the ID3 58kw battery anywhere between 211 and 230 in summer, using AC and other facilities. In near zero winter it seems to drop to around 170-180, conservation can be had by keeping heating on low setting and using the seat and steering wheel heating. 10% is approx. 20 miles ....

The Derry's look amazing (so do the Andoyas). Everyone comments on how cool the car looks. I think the ID3 is selling the concept of EV to lots of skepticals ...

But didn't I read somewhere that VW are refunding some heat pump buyers in Germany, due to it not functioning as required? Why make refunds, or partial refunds, if it can be fixed with a software update?

Refunds are on the basis that the benefits of the heat pump were oversold. The colder the winter, the bigger the benefit. Someone up in North Norway is going to benefit far more from one than someone from England with relatively mild Winters. If it benefits us in the middle of Winter to the tune of 3% more range, I'd be amazed.

I did long motorway journeys back from supplying dealers for our 2 ID3s (240 miles and 275 miles), and before I bottled out and charged at about 190 miles in, indications were that I was heading for 220 miles on a full charge at motorway speeds, with aircon on - that's without a heat pump.

I certainly wouldn't pay £1200 for a range increase of 3%.

How are they getting the extras to £3k, is it definitely 18" rims?

Those extras are £1854 plus the wheels. The heat pump cost has been reduced to £1000

18" East Derry £650
19" Andoya £1195 - It would have to be the Andoyas?

"How are they getting the extras to £3k" - I think the answer to that is that they are car dealers.

The ID3 I was originally looking at was basic. Pro version not Pro Performance, steel wheels, basic colour not metallic. The car they found to be "available" had those extras plus it was a Pro Performance.

Ha Ha a 'completely' different car then... nearly 4k different then.
