Thinking back, like remembering old girlfriends and boyfriends, I suspect we have all driven a few VW's over the years. Early on I had a string of bangers, then hand-me-down company cars when they were all the rage. At University in the 1970's we used to steal one our our friend's car keys and hide his VW Beetle. We did this mainly because he was the only one we knew who owned a car apart from our parents! But, we could all drive. How the world has changed. Later in life I was lucky enough to have a Mk II Golf GTi 16v brand new!! Another company car that was unfortunately stolen a few months later. Then a Mk III Golf VR6. That was very quick but also very thirsty! Next up was a 2005 Passat Estate 2.0 TDI...not quite as quick (!!) but family and road trip friendly. We drove to Italy in it and Sweden! Happy days. Next came the Audi A6 Avant 2.0 TDI. Moving up in the world but the same engine! Loved that car and did about 60,000 miles in it before it become too long in the tooth. Now the ID3 and back in the VW family once again. Feels like full circle and life has been punctuated at important points by VW (VW marketing will be on the phone shortly...).

I have gone for the ID3 because I want a purpose built EV that is a hatch back and suitable for both work in and around town/parking/dogs/transporting stuff/hobbies and has good range for long distance road trips. Tesla Model 3 didn't cut it for me as it has a boot, is butt ugly and poorly made and more expensive to boot. Hopefully the right decision has been made

What is everyone else's story I wonder?

Maybe I'm unusual, but my car history and path to id3 has never included a VW or Audi!

First car was a 1984 Austin Metro 1.3HLE - wish I still had that, reminds me of happy teenage days! Then bought a 1966 MGB GT which I still own 22 years on. Looked after a mate's 1973 Rover P6 while he was living abroad. Bought a 1996 MGF VVC, then a 2003 MG TF160, a 2007 Jaguar X-Type, then in a break from the Brits had a 2011 Mercedes C220 company car - then got fed up with company car tax and bought a Jaguar XF which I recently sold after 7 years to finally arrive at my current id3 Pro Performance Tech!

So thinking back, this is my first ever 5 door car and the last time I owned a hatchback was 1999! Enjoying it so far, a very different proposition to my normal choices but on balance I felt it the most compelling EV currently available. The ICE conversions are all too heavily compromised and the small number of ground-up EV designs are either too expensive or just didn't "gel" with me.

Cheers,
Tim

Many cars… highlights include (chronologically)

Mk2 escort
Alfasud
Mk2 Cooper S
AX GT (naturally aspirated version)
And strangely, mk1 corsa TDi (powerful and torquey Isuzu diesel lump in a boring looking little car. Surprised a few people at the lights in it…)
Then they’ve all been dull oil burners. E46 320d estate handled well though.

Similar story here. We have an e208 which is OK for short trips and city (up to 150 miles at motorway speed in summer) but compromised as you describe. It has an engine start button, fuel gauge type readout of charge, ACC and heated seats only on most expensive version which doesn't reflect way EVs are driven. Peugeot App and in car software only allows charging to 100% - there is no way to set it for less. Just use an Ohme cable and their app which works well.
