I'm a little envious of people with order numbers and the status of their build.

Do VW send these out automatically or do you (I) need to call the garage for this information?

The only way to currently get updates is through your dealer.
You need to keep on at them.

I had to chase Vertu for an order No. I let it go for 2 months from placing the order and eventually spoke to a Manager who couldn't understand why my Saleman had not provided it before.
My advice is to push for an order No even if they dust around its importance.
