Last Saturday I popped up to Kirkcaldy to have a look at the Cupra Born in the metal as they have their demonstrator car and a showroom car now in.

For comparison purposes it was handy their demo was white, the same as my ID.3. Side by side lets you get a decent comparison where you can see both the differences and the shared parts.

I really liked it. I know you lose the Matrix LED headlights and some, in other groups where I have posted these pictures, have made that a deal breaker for them but I am not that bothered as the Born still has LED headlights.

You gain the HUD, an improved interior (albeit some elements remain "hard") and in my opinion, better styling. I love my ID.3 and how it drives so the Born is just as good. I was that impressed I ordered one in the Aurora Blue to beat the 1st of April price rise although who knows when it might actually be delivered??

Opinions welcome as the Born certainly seems to divide them!

I really like that blue colour, it's really nice. Although I'm not sure about that aggressive styling without it having some extra oomph. I was also surprised when I realised it was notably longer than the id 3 because of the bonnet - that'll hurt manoeuvrability so if they were doing it they should have at least added a frunk. Otherwise though, it looks good and if I were buying my car 9 months later I'd have given serious consideration to both.

Not keen on the blue - too dark for me, prefer something a bit lighter, like Golf R Lapiz blue, or something a bit brighter and lighter. I do think the Cupra wears white better than the ID3 (having both a White and a Manganese Grey ID3, I prefer the Manganese). I just hate the Bronze accents though. Not keen on Bronze/Gold/Copper, much prefer silver. If I got one of those, my OCD might make me have the bronze accents wrapped in something less offensive to my eyes. Wish there was a better pic of the interior as a whole there. Is it me, or does the Cupra badge just remind you of the "Hex" symbols dotted throughout Resident Evil 4 video game?

I’m really liking the Cupra from these pictures. It’s what I wanted tbh but some weird timing put me in an ID3.

That interior does look good and I like that they spend the money moving controls to where they should be for the U.K. market. I expect VAG were seeing what they could get away with when they launched the ID3 and I’m glad they have been forced to respond with changes like the light controls being moved to the correct place.

Did you notice if they changed the windscreen wipers so they are for right-hand drive? That is the only thing I really really don’t like about my ID3. I think the wind screen wipers are actually dangerous. They splat water right into my line of sight. ☹️

Regrettably the wipers are unchanged from the ID.3 set up

Shame about the wipers but at least they moved the lights. A step in the right direction.

I too have ordered a Cupra Born alongside my id.3. Will see with gets delivered first - the Curpra dealer seemed more optimistic about getting one this year and said there are 500 pre-built cars waiting to be assigned to customers. He may just be overly optimistic, where's my VW dealer has given up any hope of optimism and refuses to disagree with my assessment that I won't see a car this year!

Me too. I have a delivery date towards the end of October, but I guess we'll see. My leasing company said I was their first Born order, which I guess helps, but they've said that subsequent orders are getting 2023 delivery dates back... :-/

I live in endless hope that I might get a call saying "would next week be acceptable to sir?" ;)

I went to take a look at the Born today myself. I definitely like some of the styling tweaks they've made compared to the ID.3, the Born just feels a bit sharper, kind of a more designer/special version of the ID.3. The interior felt a little more premium with the nicer seat material and larger navigation display, but the quality of the plastics overall felt identical in quality to those of the ID range, as expected. The bucket seats are really nice though! On the outside, i think it's a shame it doesn't have the matrix LED headlights (although if you were ordering the life pro model now, you wouldn't be getting those anyway), it kinda takes away from the premium look, I don't think the copper/bronze touches really help it much either, but I guess that's a personal thing more than anything else.

Having talked to the dealers Cupra specialist, he suggested they're hoping to have cars landing in the 3rd quarter of 2022, with VAG apparently prioritising build slots on the early Born orders to get them out on the market (which could be seen as a bit of a slap in the face to those who have already placed orders for other Zwickau built MEB platform cars), but given the current situation in Ukraine, expected that to be very fluid.

Overall, I liked it in the most part, but given how I think deliveries are going to be handling and the expected time frames (ie take everything the dealers are saying with a HUGE dose of salt), I'm pretty happy to stick with my ID.3 Max order, for now at least.

Over the last few days, I've spoken to the Cupra pop-up showroom in Trinity in Leeds, my local Cupra dealer and my lease company and had the following messages:

Pop-up shop: "Be lucky to see one this year, no matter how early you ordered it. Even early pre-orders are getting pushed back."
Local dealer: "It depends what you order, but we've already had customer orders go into build with first deliveries next month. Worst case for a 58kWh would be Q3, but the 77kWh versions will definitely take longer"
Lease company: "Mid-October" (this one is my actual car order - a stock V2 58kWh 204ps in "Free Grey")

Roll the dice, make your selection :)

Surprised you’re getting away with this thread. Maybe @Bromsgroveuser and @Newfie will be along shortly to tell you it’s off topic.

Well as the Born is clearly a sister MEB car, it's probably reasonably appropriate. Still, I've no objections to a healthy off-topic section talking about other EV options. After all, with the current delays and uncertainties, I'm sure we're not the only ones that are considering cancelling VW orders in favour of alternatives...or have already done so!

This is beginning to sound like children in the playground, so would encourage those concerned to think about their behaviour. This forum is not 'Twittbook'.
The forum is meant to be helpful .. and in 99% of cases I find the comments useful because they are based on real-life experiences. We may not agree with those opinions based on own experience, but at least it helps builds a consensus.

The original post is 'on topic' IMHO because the poster is 1) comparing the ID3 to another VW group variant looking at styling and equipment. -helpful for people who might be considering the Cupra or ID3. 2) looking at potential impact of the new model on the 'hot-topic' of deliveries, covered widely on this Forum.

In the end styling is a personal thing. I haven't seen the Cupra in the flesh yet, but from the photos posted, I like the 'sharper / more sporty' look. Given equal availability at the time of making the buy decision, I would personally have jumped for the Cupra. In a world where many cross-overs across brands look 'same-same' I like the Cupra approach of appealing to a different audience.
