Definitely sounds like a good thing to me for long-term EV sustainability!

Drivers will be able to use the Tesla app to find the stations and charge their cars, and the company is also launching a membership model that offers the chance to pay £10.99 per month to access lower kWh pricing. If you don’t sign up for that, you’ll pay roughly £0.60 per kWh at a Supercharger if you’re not driving a Model 3, Y, S or X. Pricey, but perhaps worth it given the reliability of the network.

I am super happy about this. 16 sites = about 158 new 150kW+ stalls, and hopefully more to come. I also like the incredibly straightforward pricing model.

There will be a lot of bleating about non-Tesla cars charging on Superchargers from Tesla owners I am sure, but I am not one of them !

Just for context - its quite a bit less than a quarter of the sites... 15 out of 112 SUC sites..

Still an interesting trial. I think in the NL they are all open now...

Unless you can park behind the charger it will mean parking in one bay and charging from the charge point on the next bay due to short cables and iD3 port location.

Is the charge port on the drivers side on an ID3?

Will be worse on cars like the Taycan where they've positioned it just in front of the front door.

Yes it will. But that really is looking a gift horse in the mouth, if you ask me and the problem is easily solved with better cable management.

Yes.

I think it's more that the SUC cables are quite short, so I don't think they go to distance in some circumstances.

Obviously depends on how the stalls are set up. Like this is fine...

Whoop! Whoop! Daft question incoming!

So, been watching Technology Connections' excellent video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZOuz_laH9I) on EV charging and I'm puzzled about what the different cars and chargers have. I've seen enough EVs now to know that in the UK we have a combined type-2 and CCS socket on the car to accept either AC (type-2) or DC (a larger plug that uses both the type-2 connectors and the two DC pins below - CCS). The things it that the same article (https://pod-point.com/guides/driver/ev- ... ypes-speed) says that Teslas uniquely charge via the type-2 connector but Tesla themselves make a an adapter (https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/support/charging-connectors) presumably to support charging away from their own superchargers.

What connector does a UK supercharger have and will this work OK with a non-Tesla car for more than "trickle" AC charging?

Close enough, but what you call a "combined type-2 and CCS socket" is actually just called a CCS socket. CCS uses the Type 2 pins for charge signalling, and the bottom two pins for DC rapid charging..

Only older Tesla vehicles do this (eg old Model S and Model X). Model 3 and Model Y Tesla have native, standard CCS sockets. Some older Tesla models with only the J1772 connector can use a CCS adapter (the adapter was standard with S and X produced since about 2019)

Only for Model X and S. Model 3 and Y don't need a CCS adapter.

Every UK Supercharger can deliver through an EU and UK standard CCS connection. Any CCS-equipped vehicle should be able to charge at a Supercharger that is open to the public. Chademo and AC-only vehicles (Nissan, Renault, most PHEV's) will have to go elsewhere.

For sure. Given nobody ever managed to standardise the location of a fuel filler cap in ICE cars for decades, I don't hold out much hope for standardisation in EV charging port location. Plus it's one of those things that EV zealots always get in a lather about; front, back, left/right side etc.

Even the mighty EU only succeeded in mandating that ICE vehicles in Europe have an arrow in the fuel gauge reminding the driver which side the fuel filler flap is 😂 Go Super Legislation Man !!

Tried it out today! Really easy experience. You simply select the non-Tesla option, choose the location and then select which bay you want to charge in. Takes a few seconds to get it going but it's vastly better than any other public charger I've used so far.

The car was at 47% when I plugged it in and I managed to get 60KW at its peak before it started taping off a bit. My brother also tried it with his Ioniq 5 and he managed to get nearly 100KW.

I can see myself using this quite often but it is a bit annoying that the ID3 would block Teslas because the charge port is on opposite sides.

I hope cable management and length is something Tesla will improve over time for non-Tesla vehicles. Either that or more manufacturers start putting the port on the same flank of the car!

Wow I was largely ignoring this as I hardly ever charge away from home, but i was intriged as to number 8 on the map assuming it was the Wirral or Liverpool and near work.. It's actual Flint Mountain in Wales and about 10mins away. Didn't even know they existed hidden back behind the golf club.

I don't know if there's a press release somewhere with full info - if there is I couldn't persuade Google to find it. Several reports state that only 15 of the 158 Supercharger stations are non-Tesla enabled, but most don't say which. I found a report with 14 locations:

Folkestone, Grays, Uxbridge, Birmingham, Cardiff, Wokingham, Manchester, Banbury, Thetford, Cambridge, Aberystwyth, Dundee, Aviemore and Adderstone

Maybe one of those places has two enabled stations?

You can also go directly to the Tesla Supercharger map and filter by non-Tesla chargers.
