So... in 1973 you could buy an Austin Allegro for £1000, or a VW Passat for not very much more. And the slightly patronising presenter doesn't seem to think the Passat is much better than the Allegro....

My father had a Passat of this generation, with one of the first Diesel engines. He bought it, as I remember, to save the planet. It was gutless, to say the least. Also smelly, noisy, and not nearly as economical as you might have expected. 40MPG, where my later Passat was powerful, quiet and 50MPG economical. But mine cost rather more than £1000...
