Best winter tyres?
Hive mind, go!
Also need recommendation for snow chains as I may be driving to an area of Italy where carrying them in the boot is mandatory.

I've used Michelin Pilot Alpin and Nankang Snow SV2s on Golfs. The Alpins were considerably more expensive, and a better tyre all round, but if I was only fitting them for the worst months of the year, and snow was guaranteed, then I'd get the Nankangs. They are quite remarkable in snowy conditions.

As you have no spare I would go for something self sealing.
Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ winter tires in sizes 215/55 R18 and 215/50 R19 with SealTech seals punctures up to 5mm in diameter in the tread area. Also Continental WinterContact TS 850 P with ContiSeal puncture protection technology. Alternatively Bridgestone Blizzak LM005. I think the Goodyear and Continental are the OEM tyre is you ask for winter tyre fitment at VW in Germany/Norway/Sweden. I think rolling resistance maybe slightly better as well.

Camskill are very knowledgeable and actually get hold of stock fast https://www.camskill.co.uk/ some of the other online suppliers aren't based in the UK which can lead to issues.

Thanks! It depends on the region, in some regions snow chains are mandatory regardless of your tire I think?

Semi hijack - tyre related. Seemingly the wife's Family has a slow puncture on the rear drivers side tyre. Having no spare, you're put in that awkward position that if the tyre can't be repaired when off the car, you've pretty much got to buy another tyre there and then to be mobile again.
With that in mind, you've got to have another tyre on standby, and given the niche size not often in stock, I feel that I'd have to get one ordered in before I even have that puncture looked at.
I'm seriously considering getting those crappy Bridgestones off and replace the lot with some decent all weather tyres and keep the 3 (possibly 4 if repairable) bridgestones for my Life. Been looking at possibly getting a spare steel wheel to put one of those bridgestones on for long journeys, but finding it hard to locate an 18" wheel for sensible money.

I run Michelin cross climate on all my vehicles, if I can get them in the size required they’ll be going on the id3 too!monkeyhanger wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 6:40 am hi

Minor update on this. Are all UK VW dealers awful? Is that in their job description?
My chosen service provider not calling back, the place where we bought the car just being quite standoffish.
I can see why Tesla didn't bother with dealers.

So local Islington lot doesn't have any winter tyres for the ID.3. KwikFit only offers the CrossClimate2, which is not a winter tyre. Marshall's isn't calling back.
The Michelin website tells me I can get the Alpin 6 at ATS Euromaster, but they only offer Goodyear(!). Or KwikFit, but they offer no winter tyres whatsoever.
This will be harder than I thought.

Isn't "winter in Islington" basically when you have to order your latte extra hot ?

At 5C.ambient this morning and a little bit of dew on the ground, those Bridgestones are very easily provoked into losing traction. Wasn't aiming to drive like a nutter, just seeing how much grip deteriorated with the cooler weather. The answer is...a lot!

Just missed out on the Costco tyre offers (£80 off 4) as they cycle between Michelin, Goodyear and Bridgestone. Michelin ended Sun Bridgestone started yesterday - presuming Goodyear in 3 weeks time. Will make enquiries as to what they can get in for a Goodyesr tyre.

Costco only offers the Turanza, which I currently have on.
Thanks for the Black Circles tip - they offer Vredestein Wintrac at a reasonable price. Anyone got views on those?

Costco can order in any Michelin tyre, but it's a manual process at the branch to do so - I did this to get some PSS for my Golf R. I presume (and hope) they can do the same for any Goodyear tyre. You're not just limited to what they generally stock, but you will have to wait for them to come in.
