Hi.

I put the car into Eco mode and drive it. Every now and then I check what mode it is in. Sometimes it seems to default to Comfort mode unasked. Is this a fault or is there something I can do to keep it in Eco mode. Thanks.

The drive settings of the car return to Comfort mode every time you start the car, regardless of what the screen says - it’s mentioned in the manual.

If you want all settings in Eco mode every time you need to change it to another mode then back to Eco every time you start it.

I wonder how much difference it makes to the range, unless you have it in Eco for some other reason?

Thanks. If it has no effect on range what is it for?

That's what I see as well. Or is the car not telling the truth and, although it may say Eco mode, it's actually running in comfort mode? As I think most will be aware, VW are not renowned for their software prowess.

As I said, I wonder how much it effects range…

The “drive” characteristic will be switching back to Comfort every time, the interface just doesn’t tell you that.

I’m not sure they could have made those 2 statements any more confusing!

Every VAG I've had with driving modes in the last 10 years has always defaulted to Normal or Comfort in the next ignition cycle. Seems pointless to do so when these mode generally take full throttle response in Sport/Race and blunt it accordingly for Normal/Comfort and even further for Eco mode (usually with coasting/freewheeling going on in Eco mode).

I don't find blunting the throttle a fuel saving measure - if you want to go faster, you'll just press the pedal harder in Comfort/Normal than you will in Sport for the same effect.

Presumably there's a very small efficiency gain that VW want reflected in their official emissions settings for ICE cars, doesn't seem that relevant for the ID3 unless you're talking about eyeing out an extra 2 or 3 miles range on the WLTP cycle, and to be able to quote that figure you need to have the car in that mode on start up.

Presumably the first statement relates to non-throttle response parameters within the previously selected driving mode e.g. if you have DCC and variable ratio steering wheel, you left it in Sport last time, you'll still get the suspension and steering stiffened up, even though the throttle response will be acting as per Comfort. This was certainly the case with my Golf GTD, R and Polo GTIs.

In short: Drive settings revert to Comfort, everything else stays as it was.

Perhaps also depends on outside temperatures and what you have set for the heating /ventilation. ECO mode in most cars cuts out the air-conditioning. If you have climatisation ‘auto’ set, then I would expect ‘comfort’ mode to be the default.
As you know, it is possible to control the air conditioning via the settings in the WeConnect ID app and also a setting in the infotainment system.

I have driven with economy mode and realized it caps max speed to 80mph. My preferred is sport since my previous car was a Ford St3 lol, comfort feels boring and doesn't feel like a 200bhp car somehow might be just me. Sport mode feels more fun to drive and I don't really notice the drop in range much compared to other modes.

My previous car was also the ST3. I think what you are missing is the sound/noise? Driving this ID3 it's easy to miss the fact how fast you pick up speed. No gears, no noise.

Out of interest, how did you find out that it caps speed to 80mph?

Well by driving it to 80mph that's how I know, accelerator down all the way but max speed 80mph on eco. can verify 99mph is max speed in other modes and the battery consumption becomes ridiculous

Agree sometimes it's difficult to tell due to no engine noise, I always drive it in sport mode though as I like the responsiveness compared to other modes and the steering feel. I do miss my st3 there is something about it that makes it more fun to drive than id3 sport mode. Also miss the recaro bucket seats. But was time to move on to ev.
