Hmm, I don’t dispute any of the details you’ve focussed on, but I do think that by going into those details the bigger, more subjective, picture has been missed. To me the Born’s interior feels subjectively more premium. My wife was very unimpressed with the id.3 interior, but I ordered one anyway. On getting into a Born her immediate reaction was “this is really nice”, so we both had a similar reaction. Of course the born has a bit more of a “boy racer” style, whereas the id.3 is more “middle class” for want of a better description - so some may like one or other for those reasons. But to both myself and my wife the Born has a more premium feeling. Really it’s subjective, but the emotional reaction is was real.
Totally subjective, My wife thought it was hideous and looked cheap. I think the structure of the seats is nice but only if you want that, but am baffled as to why people think the interior is 'more premium'. I have a colleague who has just received a new family PP, I haven't seen it yet, He says he's dissappointed with the new interior and prefers mine.

Absolutely subjective, based on my breakdown of the interior components, there's been no more money spent on the Born than the ID3. Duncsand has associated the hot hatch vibe with premium, and I saw no evidence of premium . The Born's interior is nowhere near as plush as my 2013 Golf GTD or 2015 Golf R's were.

I do prefer the sports seats and the arm rest to those on the ID3 (but they wouldn't have cost any more to implement than what the ID3 has), but the door cards overall are slightly inferior (especially the back doors), the dash in general is no better, I find the copper accents a bit gaudy, and the "neck pillow" trim on the dash is plain odd. The lack of better driving dynamics also just add to my conclusion that the Born is simply an ID3 clone with a Halfords makeover, and the difference between the 2 is simply subjective taste, with an overlapping target audience. They've done enough to differentiate the 2 models without spending any more on one rather than the other.

When you look at the differences in car interiors, aside from the use of Nappa Leather on seats for certain marques and models, it would cost a tiny amount to make the interiors seem seriously upmarket, we're taking no more than £40 a car spent, adding maybe £150 to the RRP - the main money spent in the car is in the equipment rather than door and dash trim.

My continued curiosity in the Born is pretty much all in how much quicker the 230ps variant is/feels than the ID3 I already have. I could live with the bits of the Born I don't particularly like if that 230ps boost feels like a significant upgrade. However, if VW announced tomorrow that you could buy that 230ps boost activation for £700 as there's no additional hardware required, I probably wouldn't give the Born a second thought.

Haha, OK, I think we disagree. I like the “gaudy” copper bits and the dash “neck pillow” with its copper stitching - they, amongst other things, help to lift the subjective feeling a decent amount for me. Almost certainly the two cars cost the same to build, so preference is very much in the eye of the beholder. Weirdly I prefer the id3’s seats - the Born seats look too boy racery to me. On balance I’d prefer to be in the Born though.

OK, if the extra 26ps doesn't wow me enough to get one, maybe we can just swap seats between the 2 cars?

I'm definitely a Chrome/brushed Stainless kind of person rathger than Copper/Gold. If I were choosing from scratch, having neither car, and the 230ps was not in contention, the Born might just edge it for me, on the basis of the front end, I would probably prefer the ID3s front end if it had no black hump. Overall its a very close thing for me between the 2.

Mrs Daern's opinion rather swung it for us - The cars are virtually identical and both excellent. But she didn't consider the ID.3 to be much of a looker from the front and, in the flesh, the Cupra won the looks contest hands down for her. She was sad to lose the matrix headlights (not that any new orders are getting them anyway), but the HUD is a nice and useful addition and the interior did feel, for us, plusher in the V2 Born than in the Family ID.3. Again, this was based on test drives of ID.3 models that we wouldn't have received anyway due to long delays and model year switches, so can't really say how they really compare right now.

In the end, the pricing was almost identical, the specs virtually the same, but a combination of the front-end look and the fact that it seems like we could get a Born several (maybe many!) months earlier made the final decision and switched our order. We wouldn't have been unhappy with an ID.3 - it's almost the same car - but we're also happy with the decision that we made. Car selections are a subjective thing, but in this house there wasn't much of a debate.

On the black hump, I am considering popping to a local specialist to see about getting the black hump vinyl wrapped body colour. I had spoken to a local bodyshop about obtaining a replacement and having it sprayed, but not too sure how it's attached.

I test drove (and ordered) a Cupra Born today. The drive feels a lot like the ID3 but it feels as if the suspension has been tightened up to me. Others have said the it feels exactly the same. In acceleration it did (and it was the 204PS) but the ride felt a bit firmer. I think I have seen in the reviewed the suspension has been tightened up?

The dealer had cars in stock so I've decided to jump ship and get a Cupra Born v2 with tech pack L. As it's stock I couldn't change that but it's got all the bits and pieces I would want. I pick it up next Friday.

Spec: Family Pro Performance Glacier White Andoya Alloys

The born is 3cm lower… which id expect is in the suspension being lowered rather than the roofline!

It's strange because the arch gap certainly doesn't look 3cm less!

Yes it doesn’t look lowered - would they really take 3cm off the shell? That’s a hell of an extra (complete!) tooling job!!

Which variant did you drive? Comparing apples to apples, I test drove a V1 204ps, 18" wheels as standard. It didn't feel any better than my ID3 204ps on 18" alloys, it felt marginally worse for understeer, but I was pushing it quite a bit. If these had uprated suspension vs the ID3, Cupra would be making a big deal about it in their specs. Any difference you might've felt was quite likely the difference between wheel sizes, and less sidewall on the Cupra if a bigger tyre size, or even a different brand of tyres if comparing the rock hard Flintstones to a softer compound Conti/Michelin/Goodyear. It's hard to work suspension miracles on a Golf sized car that weighs the same as an Audi A6.

It's time to start a Born Forum. The purpose of this forum was to talk about the ID 3.The Born is a ID.3 all dressed up.The little tweeks is what the ID.3 should have been.It us a pointless thread at this stage.

The differences are only skin deep, and the Born talk is generally being kept to the threads that specify a Born topic, can't see any harm in it as all.

Given it's in off topic then think it's fine. In terms of the tweeks and differences then some will prefer them and others won't. Guess because the id.3 was available before the born you will naturally have some id.3 owners who would have bought a born had it been available at the time as they like the tweeks.

Here come the forum Police again. We’ve been through this recently with my Polestar thread. Mods stated that the “Off Topic” section was exactly for this purpose, i.e discussion about other cars. If you don’t like it, don’t read it ;)

It's a great thread. Doing exactly what it says it does - comparing one to the other. As was the Polestar one. Keep up the posts please - I've no intention of getting a Born - but am interested in any differences between the two.
