Windscreen wipers

Just went outside to clear snow off my id3. Despite clearing the snow of the windscreen, there was a small accumulation of snow on top of one wiper, jumped in the car switched on the wipers, this tiny amount of snow on one wiper caused the wipers to start out of sync and ended with the wiper blade breaking off the arm. What a terrible design, can't drive the car until weather improves and I can travel for a replacement!!

On this subject....where does a person get windscreen wipers these days ?

Can you still pop into your local automotive supplier, e.g. Halfords, pick them up and easily fit them yourself....or like everything else are they so specialised now that you have to have a dealer source and replace them for extra ££££?

Can you still pop into your local automotive supplier, e.g. Halfords, pick them up and easily fit them yourself....or like everything else are they so specialised now that you have to have a dealer source and replace them for extra ££££?

There are some Bosch ones that work with the ID3 and are supposed to be much better than OEM ones. They are order of £20 I think.

Thanks. They seem reasonably priced. I've been with a posher brand for a few years and had got used to being fleeced for as much as a tyre valve dust cap

Have you bought and fitted yourself and found it easy to do ?

Yes it's fairly straightforward, they come with instructions. There are a few different fitment parts in the box and you just have to be careful to pick the right one (the Bosch don't exactly match the OEM ones).

Did you identify the design fault?
I had a wiper blade break off a Mercedes A Class years ago, while driving in mucky weather. I suppose that's when a fatigue crack or whatever will finally give up, or when the wiper is put in motion.
Replaced it.

I've not looked carefully, but often the left and right wipers are the same, and therefore you can pull the good one off to fit to the driver side, and limp along like that.

The first wipers I met were on the old Land Rover, you had to start each by hand, and if the motor stopped working you could carry on turning it by hand to clear the windscreen.
I'm fairly clear that things have improved since then.

Yeah, check the wipers are free to move before switching them on (just clipped this small rock with my front bumper while reversing, ripped it right off what a terrible design, vibes; sorry couldn't resist)

Earlier this year, next door's cat got in the habit of launching itself on to our car roof at night. I think it used one of the wiper blades for traction because one morning it had snapped.

Since then I always move the wipers to service position on the "Good bye" screen. This would probably good practice for snowy conditions too.
