I waited 18 months for delivery and I've had the car for 18 months. Some really good people on here that have been helpful, supportive and funny. Thank you to all for making my transition to a BEV as painless as possible. Special thanks to @Sidehaas.

I like most things about the ID3, the size, nippiness and comfort. I didn't even mind getting it in silver although that wasn't what I ordered. I like the haptic buttons and I like the lack of rear window buttons. It's been a long time since I smiled so much when I getting into a car.

Two things I wish would be better: I wish the car would lock when you walk away, I have left it parked up countless times unlocked. And I wish the mood lighting would stay the colour I put it to rather than forever going back to VW blue. Pesky 1st world problem that.

I'm not hung up on updates as such, but the software and the way it works is disappointing. I suspect that's not unique to the ID3 or VW. I'm on 3.2.

The biggest let down was Lookers VW Carlisle and VW for their terrible customer care. Just shocking.

Would I get another? Yes, if it met my needs I would, but not from Lookers!

What's next? A bigger car is needed so we pick up a Skoda Enyaq tomorrow.

The Yak is on 5.2 and it is super fast and slick. Clearly the hardware is much better.

I already miss my HUD and memory parking!!

I'm not saying the boot is big, but it has an echo!

You CAN set the car to lock when you walk away (with complementary auto unlock when you approach). I forget exactly where in the system that is done. I disabled it, as it meant every time I walked past the car if I had the key with me it went through an unlock / lock cycle. Very irritating!

I assume so - our Life Pro is 2021 model, fully updated.

Are you sure? Mine unlocks OK but doesn’t lock when walking away. Unless I have missed a setting somewhere.

It definitely locked as well as unlocked. Walk down the drive, beep, beep, flash, flash, unlock. Get indoors and put the key in its tin (I know it doesn't need a Faraday cage for security, but anyway ...), beep, beep, flash, flash, lock.

Thanks for the clarification. Mine is a 2023 on V3.7. I must admit that I prefer it not to auto lock as I walk away. I prefer to know that I have actually done something to make it lock, such as using the keyless entry/exit or, as in the old days, the key fob.

I keep mine in a tin also, as much for neatness and convenience, but could I ask how we know that the Faraday cage is not needed, please?

Because the fob goes quiescent and stops responding to "pings" after it's been stationary for a few minutes.

These VW keys can't be used for "relay" type car break-ins, where they use one unit near the car and another near you to fool the car into thinking the key signals are legit. The radio system involved is called Ultra Wide Band (UWB) - and one of its features is the ability to measure time-of-flight of the radio signal, which translates into distance between car and key. Adding a unit to relay signals between car and key over a significant distance would mean the car would regard the signals as illegitimate.

Also, the key itself has motion sensors, and when it has been completely stationary for more than a minute or few it shuts down all functions. So a Faraday cage (which blocks radio signals) isn't needed. But a tin is where our various keys live anyway, and it reassures some family members who were concerned that we could have our shiny new car stolen from outside the house if we didn't use a tin.

;) As well as any added physical distance, the reaction time between reception and retransmission in a man in the middle system would correspond to a radio signal travelling a long way, even if it was not doing much processing in between.
