News of delays seems to have calmed down a bit recently. I hope my car doesn't get partially built then wait for parts for weeks.

Ordered end of June. In early August got "confirmed" production start of week 34 (week beginning Aug 23) - which the dealer said was hypothetical as production was then running about 8 weeks late, so to expect "production around the middle of October and delivery maybe mid November". Which was what we'd been advised when we placed the order. Nothing specific since then.

Emailed my dealer earlier today and the girl I’ve been dealing with was most helpful. I’ve been given a build week of 39 (27 September), order went in 11 July. She is still talking of delivery end of November; no problem. I’ve asked for an update first week of October which she’s happy to do.

I asked about VW removing the tracker and SMS updates. Replied that it’s due to component shortage. Production up and down daily and the tracker a waste of time as build weeks are all over the place. Not sure if this is official fromVW or just what the dealer thinks although it makes sense to me.

Now need to think about a home charger in a couple of weeks.

That makes sense. Imagine so many requests per day with very few changes and imagine it's for every VW car order lol. It's kind of a waste of computation and internet traffic tbh. I imagine they'll bring it back when lead times reduce

It got me reading Wikipedia on the Trabant, and I found a couple more similarities with the ID.3:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trabant wrote:Known for its dull colour scheme [...]

Turquoise apart, I think the ID.3 colour scheme would make the Trabant proud. :-)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trabant wrote:The free market price for a second-hand one [Trabant] was more than twice the price of a new one

Currently, one-year-old cars can be more expensive than new cars (Lunatic used car valuations). OK, not more than twice the price, but the waiting time for the ID.3 is also not as long as the 10 to 13 years waiting time for the Trabant. Not yet, anyway.

And of course, both made in Germany (ish). Luckily that's where I think the similarities end:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trabant wrote:The engine produced a very smoky exhaust and was a significant source of air pollution: nine times the hydrocarbons and five times the carbon-monoxide emissions of the average 2007 European car. [...] Since the engine was two-stroke, oil had to be added to the 24-litre fuel tank at a 50:1 (or 33:1) ratio of fuel to oil at each fill-up. [...] Earlier models had no fuel gauge, and a dipstick was inserted into the tank to determine how much fuel remained.

At least on the tech, we've come a long way: microchips everywhere! Except in VW's factories. :-)

Wasn't the Trabant also made in Zwickau

Similar timescales from order to build for us - we ordered in the first week of August and were given a provisional build week a couple of days ago of week 42 (18 October.) Dealer also talking about November delivery (an advance on the December estimate when we ordered) but I'd be happy with anything before Christmas.

Mid to end of November was always the original estimate for delivery. Although she did make a throwaway remark along the lines of may get it for Christmas if all goes well ;)

Luckily I’m in no hurry.

Did you check with VW live chat/dealership? They said build date should be confirmed within 2-3 weeks of factory order being accepted

Build week isn't confirmed until about 4 weeks before it is actually built. It is at that point that modification to the order cannot be made and VW has secured/allocated all parts required to your order.

You're right. Sorry, what I mean to say was an estimated build date should be given within 2-3 weeks after factory accepts order. It's then only confirmed 4 weeks before.

Currently there is one ship in Emden with no destination as yet but usually does the Grimsby trip and sometimes goes on to Tyne afterwards.

Nice. Do you know if this was a full on factory order (mine was) or whether your dealer already had one on back order that was allocated to you ? Our order went in a couple weeks after yours, and it’s going to be at least week 40 before it goes into assembly, if not later.

Indeed, lucky so and so. News reports from the last few days say that semi-conductor shortages were exacerbated by Covid causing factories in Malaysia to close down, and although other areas, like Taiwan, are trying to ramp production there will be shortages for some time to come. VW think things may improve in the next quarter (Oct-Dec?) and "hope" to get back to normal "some time" in 2022. We ordered 8th Aug and expecting a call from the dealer soon with an update, but I suspect they won't want to proactively ring with bad news! Still, they said Jan 22, hopefully Dec 21 when we ordered so there's still some time to go yet.

How are you checking this?

How long does it normally en-route to UK?

The Marine Traffic website. This should show Emden port and The City of Rotterdam is the ship that frequently ships to Grimsby and Tyne, https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/ho ... 39/zoom:15
The running of ships has slowed down a lot over the last few weeks. Many of the ships that make the journey from Emden to the UK are eithered moored up at the last port and at anchor. I have never seen it so quiet.
The Ems Highway is due to dock at Grimsby at 20.30 tonight.
The time to cross is around 24 hours but sometimes depending on tide it takes a little longer to dock.
When my Tiguan was shipped over 3 years ago it sat in the Humber Estuary for 2 days as it was too windy to dock.

But how do you know the names of the ships that VW uses?

I tracked my Ioniq a while back and there was a website which showed shipping schedules for the shipping company Hyundai used. It took nearly 2 months to get to the UK!
