I'm about to be a 2022 ID3 owner and am new to EVs.

I wondered,...typically do people use an app connected to their EV charger, or an app connected to the ID3 to monitor charging ?

The free VW app shows real time charging status. It allows you to adjust the amount of charge you want and you can change the charge rate to 2Kwh if you want. It will tell you the estimated time a charge will finish and you can set things like departure times etc. I also have a Wallbox charger and I can see lots more info in the Wallbox app like history. If you subscribe to Octopus Intelligent GO, Octopus can also control the time the charge starts and stops.

I picked up the car today. Sat with the dealer and logged into VW account on both car and phone app.

Now I've got home when I go in the app there is very little no info. All I see is this..

1) At the top a photo of my car
2) Bottom right it says 'Air Conditioning off'
3) Bottom left says range, but is greyed out and there are no numbers. If I click in this area nothing happens.

I'm in he house. The car is outside, parked up and not on charge.

Does the car need to be on, or on charge to show me the range in this app ?

Can anybody help ?

No the car doesn’t need to be on to see the range and the state of charge. On this same screen there should also be 4 menus below the range and air conditioning boxes. These are:
Departure times
Vehicle Health Report
Authorised workshop
Settings

I’ve had my car for two and a half years now and have forgotten how I set all this up but it was simple at the time. Hopefully someone else will advise you. If not, get the dealership to help.

No I guess I assumed whatever was needed had been put in place by VW at least for a trial period after sale of the car to me (albeit a used car).

...combined with not really knowing I needed to sign up to anything.

Go to the car,"shop" in the infotainment system. You just need to sign up via there if you haven't already. Weconnect is free. Weconnect plus may be free or may not be, it was free for everyone but there seem to have been recent changes.
