I have a Dec 2020 ID3 family edition. My car recently prompted me for the 3.7 software update which it seemed to download and install without a problem.

My question is - does the car use its own eSim to dowload OTA software updates or will these updates only happen if the car is connected to your home wifi network?

I ask because I have never paid for an eSim subscription for the car but it seems like its still working over 4 years after I have purchased the car from new.
I have never been prompted to buy or renew a subscription for my cars eSim or been warned that i will loose mobile connectivity between the car and VW servers if I do not update by eSim subscription.

The other question I have is what is the point of the car scanning for wifi networks to connect to your home network if OTA softwate updates are distributed via 4g direct to the cars eSIM?
Never understood why you would want to connect your ID3 to your home wifi network...

The car doesn't use wifi. There's no point connecting to a home access point.

As for why it can, there's nothing stopping you using a mobile access point on another device for something like internet radio.
