Battery SoH on a used car
I'm looking to buy a used (2021) ID.3 from Arnold Clark. However, Arnold Clark has said they can't provide any information regarding the battery health of the used cars. Is that right (the salesman I'm dealing with is not very helpful and has already provided incorrect info, e.g. he told me the manufacturers battery warranty guarantees 90% for 100k miles with no time limit)?
Are there some dealers that can provide a battery SoH? I've tried calling around a couple of dealers today and they don't seem to be able to provide much information about battery health.
If dealers cannot provide any info on battery health, how can I get comfortable that I'm not buying a car that already has pretty serious battery degradation? (I know about that warranty but that only kicks in at 70% degaration so you could still have quite a degraded battery but not qualify under the warranty).
Thank you

You can get a battery health certificate with any used ID car from a VW dealer, with estimated remaining % capacity and some other info.
An independent won't usually give you anything but you can find enough info for peace of mind using an OBD reader and the carscanner app if they will let you plug it in. I actually just described this for someone else in one of the other threads currently near the top of the forum, have a look at that.

To me VW would have thought long and hard before guaranteeing 70% batteries capacity after 8 years or 100k miles...before putting themselves anywhere near being on the hook for a MASSIVE battery recall programme when cars reach that stage.
So my guess is we can expect the vast majority of batteries to land at north of 75%/80% by then and follow a steady trajectory from new to there.
To that end, as owner of a 2.5 year old ID3 with 26k miles I therefore haven't given a second thought to battery degredation.

Carscanner is just an app you can use it with a variety of OBD reader devices. I have a veepeak one.

Ah, this all makes sense now. I have a VW Dataplug but I don’t expect it would work with it. Looks like the Veepeak is a popular choice though so I’ll have a look at that one then, thanks.

You can't turn it off, but you can arrange for it to remember its last setting. You will need OBDEleven to do that.

So if the veepeak is left plugged in then it means I won’t need to turn it off every time?StewartManley wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 11:23 amYou can't turn it off, but you can arrange for it to remember its last setting. You will need OBDEleven to do that.

And the obdeleven can turn it off completely and so be removed from the obd2 port. Is that the correct understanding?

Hang on, a basic veepeak reader can't do that. It's just a reader. If you want to change settings you need a more expensive OBD eleven device I think.Fry wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 12:27 pmSo if the veepeak is left plugged in then it means I won’t need to turn it off every time?StewartManley wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 11:23 amYou can't turn it off, but you can arrange for it to remember its last setting. You also don't leave it plugged in, at least not without being careful to turn it off from the carscanner app every time. Otherwise it will sometimes set the alarm off.

Ah, oh well. Not sure I want to stretch for that device just yet looking at the price of it.sidehaas wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 3:56 pmHang on, a basic veepeak reader can't do that. It's just a reader. Veepeak just arrived. Nice little case it comes in with some decent instructions. Not yet tried it but it clearly says not to leave it plugged in or drive with it. Fairly inexpensive and I can use it for my other fleet of cars too so no worries I guess.

It can be set to remember its last setting. If you have it on for a journey (for use with Travel Assist, for example) and don't turn it off again, it will be on next time you start the car.
